Andrew Cuomo is an American politician of the Democratic Party, who is an author, a lawyer and the 56th Governor of New York from January 1, 2011. His political career can be dated back to his time as his father campaign manager – as his father, Mario Cuomo served as the governor of NY for three terms.

He was born in the Queens Borough of New York on December 6, 1957, where he was raised as the eldest son of his parents who are of Italian descent. His mother is Matilda (née Raffa) and his father, late Governor Mario Cuomo was a lawyer before he assuming the leadership position of the state.
As a graduate of Fordham University and Albany Law School of Union University, New York, Cuomo joined politics as the campaign manager for his father. He also practiced his profession as an assistant district attorney in the city before going private. He is the founder of HELP USA, the Housing Enterprise for the Less Privileged and later became the New York City Homeless Commission (1990-1993).
He had held several government positions including, Assistant Secretary for Community Planning and Development during the Clinton Administration (May 28, 1993 – January 29, 1996); served as the 11th U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (January 29, 1997 – January 20, 2001); became the 64th Attorney General of New York (January 1, 2007- December 31, 2010); and won 2010 gubernatorial governorship election to become the 56th Governor of New York.
He contested for a third tenure as governor in the 2018 New York gubernatorial election after his second term elapsed. After the primary election, with 93% of precincts reporting, Cuomo won by 65% of the vote against his opponent, actress-and-activist Cynthia Nixon’s 35%.
In his two terms as the governor, his leadership is credited with making the state a beacon for social progress in the nation, making it a stronger economy, a cleaner environment, a fairer criminal justice system, and producing more high school graduates attending college than before.
His administration takes credits for enacting progressive tax code, conservation of more lands, launching the most ambitious infrastructure program in the country such as rebuilding the Penn Station, the new Mario Cuomo bridge, LaGuardia and JFK airports. They also boast of making historic investments in economic development, education, and healthcare, thereby saving upstate New York from being “treated as the forgotten stepchild of Albany.”
