Barbara Corcoran is a U.S real estate mogul, investor, speaker, consultant, and author. She is also a popular face on ABC’s Shark Tank, where she displays so much expertise.

Interestingly, the self-made millionaire was not born with a silver spoon and had the most humble beginning you could ever imagine. Speaking once in an interview, Corcoran expressed that she at times find it difficult to believe that she has accomplished most of the things fantasized as a kid.

From sharing a room in her parents’ 2-bedroom flat with her nine siblings to owning a penthouse on Fifth Avenue, how did she do that? How did Barbara Corcoran – a straight D-student become one of America’s most influential and popular real estate moguls with a number of properties under her care?  Here are the facts you need to know.

Barbara Corcoran Age and Early Life

Cocoran was born in the factory town of Edgewater, New Jersey on March 10, 1949, as Barbara Ann Corcoran. She is one of the ten children born to her parents. As a child, Corcoran remembered sharing a room with her nine siblings in their parents’ 2-bedroom flat.

Growing up, she wasn’t one of those kids you’d describe as bright. As mentioned earlier, Barbara was a straight D-student. She was labeled a dull and dumb kid due to undiagnosed dyslexia which has remained her driving force to date as she is always trying to prove her intellect. The lady has a degree in education which she obtained from St. Thomas Aquinas College.

Net Worth and Real Estate Investments

Barbara Corcoran has always wanted to be her own boss. After working 22 jobs which included working as a teacher and a waitress among others, Cocoran in 1973 co-founded a real estate business named The Corcoran Group with her boyfriend and business partner who provided a $1,000 loan.

Two years later, the business could boast of 14 agents and a half million dollars in sales. By mid-1970s Barbara began publishing The Corcoran Report on real estate data trends in New York City. But five years into the business, she lost her business partner. Cocoran’s boyfriend pulled out of the business after announcing to her he was marrying her (Corcoran’s) secretary.

He also told her she will never succeed without him but years have passed and Corcoran has proved him wrong. By early 2000, the business had made more sales than any other competitor in the whole New York City, making her the queen of New York real estate.

In 2001, she sold The Corcoran Group to NRT Incorporated for $66 million. Explaining her reason for selling the already successful real estate firm, the business mogul said despite her huge success at the time, she still felt miserable and thus, had to make a list of what she loved and what she hated. This helped her realize that she loves making people happy, that she has always loved the media and the attention of a crowd; thus, she decided to dive into the TV business.

She became a Shark investor on ABC’s show Shark Tank and has so far made a total of 52 deals on the show, (including tandem ventures). Her biggest investment on the show so far is the one with Coverplay for $350,000.

Barbara is an author and also a columnist for The Daily Review, New York Daily News, Redbook and More Magazine. She has been featured in various shows including Larry King Live and has been a guest speaker at various real estate events.

The business mogul also consults via her consulting and television production business, Barbara Corcoran Inc. It is known that she contributes to NBC’s Today show just as it is a common knowledge that she hosts The Millionaire Broker with Barbara Corcoran on CNBC.

The real estate mogul is currently worth $80 million. Apart from the $66 million she made from the sale of her company in 2001, her average investment size is put at $103,113 while the median amount of her investments is $75,000. Corcoran has invested over $5.4 million on air.
