Bernie Sanders had the spotlight shine on him for the longest duration of his political career during the 2016 presidential election campaign. He is a socialist and one of the oldest politicians on either side of the USA’s political divide still in action.

One of the things that readily comes to mind is his complex family ties, which he managed to keep under wraps for a long time until his presidential campaign. He is a member of the Democratic party and has the number of years of service to show for it.

Bernie Sanders’s father and maternal grandparents were Jewish immigrants from Poland and Russia. His father, Ben Yehuda Sanders came to the USA at the age of 17 and became a paint salesman. His mother, Dorothy Sanders, was born in New York City.

Bernie was born in Brooklyn, New York City on September 8, 1941. He did his elementary education at P.S 197 in Brooklyn and went on to James Madison High School. He participated in athletic activities while in both schools. Sanders helped his elementary school’s basketball team to a borough championship and captained his high school’s track team where he came third place in New York City Indoor one-mile race.

A turn of tragic events inspired Bernie Sanders’s interest in politics. This happened when Adolf Hitler’s holocaust took the lives of 6 million Jews, including most of his Jewish relatives in the then German-occupied Poland. From then on he understood the sensitivity and power of political offices.

He took and lost his first stab at politics in high school. It was an election for the student body presidency. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science in 1964, from the University of Chicago. Before this, he had also spent a year at Brooklyn College. Bernie Sanders says that he was never challenged by the classroom. He got the most education and inspiration from being in the community.

 

While in school, he was a member of the Young People’s Socialist League and was active with the Civil Rights Movement and the Congress of Racial Equity. He was also involved in the 1963 . This was where Martin Luther King Jr. gave his now immortalised I Have A Dream speech.

Between 1964 and 1971, Bernie Sanders wore numerous hats and titles. At different times he worked as a carpenter, psychiatric aide, filmmaker, head start teacher and freelance writer.

Sanders’ electoral political career kicked off in 1971 with the Liberation Union Party, which he retired from in October of 1977. He has since held several electoral positions. The earliest being the Mayoral seat of Vermont from April 1981 to April 1989.

After two years away from politics as a professor, Bernie Sanders became the first independent since 1950 to be elected to the U.S House of Representatives. He held this position until 2007 when he made it into the Senate, after caucusing with the Democratic party. He received endorsements from many political heavyweights such as the then-Senator Barack Obama.

On April 30, 2015, he his plan to run for the President of the United States under the Democratic party’s banner. Despite a very promising campaign and enthusiastic supporters, he lost the Democratic primaries to former First lady and Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton. He took his loss well and put his weight behind her, formally endorsing her on July 12, 2016.

Sanders stands as the only presidential candidate throughout history to be invited to the Vatican to speak on issues regarding morality, the economy and the environment.

Bernie Sanders has an elder brother, Larry Sanders, born 25th April 1935. He is the Health spokesperson for the green party. Their mother and father died in 1959 and 1962 respectively. His first marriage to his high school sweetheart lasted for all of eighteen months, between 1964 – 1966. They lived on 85 acres of land in a sugar shack in Vermont.

He had his only biological son, Levi Sanders, with his then-girlfriend, Susan Campbell Mott on March 29, 1969. Levi graduated with a B.A in history from the University of Oregon in 1992. He currently works at Cambridge & Sommerville Legal services in Boston. According to his LinkedIn account, he is a social security disability insurance senior analyst.

Bernie has been married to Jane O’Meara Driscoll since 1988. Jane, who became president of Burlington College in Vermont, came into the relationship with three children. Bernie Sanders considers his three step-children, Dave Driscoll, Carina Driscoll and Heather Titus, as his own. He currently has seven grandchildren.
