Bob Corker is an American-born businessman involved mainly in real estate development. He is also a politician and assumed office as the junior senator from the US state of Tennessee in January 2007 as a member of the Republican Party. He was reelected for a second term in 2012 and has served as the Senate Foreign Relations Committee chairman since January 2015.

Corker announced in September 2017 that his stint as senator would be limited to just 2 terms as he would not seek reelection in 2018. Prior to being elected as senator, he had a one-term stint as the Mayor of Chattanooga and he also served as Commissioner of Finance and Administration for the State of Tennessee.

Robert Phillips Corker Jr. was born on the 24th of August 1952 to Jean and Robert Phillips Corker in the city of Orangeburg, South Carolina where he spent the first ten years of his life. His family eventually moved to Tennessee when he was 11 years of age. He is the great-great-grandson of Stephen A. Corker, a former US congressman who represented the state of Georgia.

Bob Corker attended the Chattanooga High School and graduated in 1970 and went ahead to obtain a Bachelors degree in Industrial Management from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville in 1974. In his early twenties, he took part in a mission trip to Haiti, which gave him the motivation to participate more actively in his own community. Upon his return from the mission, he helped to start the Chattanooga Neighborhood Enterprise, a non-profit organization that provided home loans with low-interest rates.

Upon graduation from college, Corker gained employment as a construction worker and several years later, he was able to establish his first construction company Bencor, in 1978. The company grew in leaps and bounds in the years that followed and by 1990, he sold it off. Corker has maintained his prosperous real estate business even after delving into politics. He took his first shot at the US Senatorial seat in 1994 when he contested against Bill Frist for the Republican party ticket, but lost to the latter.

In January 1995, then-Governor of Tennessee, Don Sundquist appointed Corker as the state’s Commissioner of Finance and Administration, a position he held till July 1996. His next political office was as the Mayor of Chattanooga between 2001 and 2005. Corker contested for the US Senate election in 2006 under the Republican party and this time, he ultimately defeated his Democratic opponent Harold Ford Jr. in the general election.

He was sworn into office on January 4, 2007, and was the only non-incumbent Republican to be elected as senator in the 110th Congress. He was successfully re-elected in 2012 and he assumed office as the chairman of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations (115th Congress). On September 26, 2017, Corker announced that he would not seek reelection in 2018, in keeping with a promise he made before assuming office to only serve two terms.

Bob Corker got married for over 3 decades to his wife Elizabeth. The couple tied the knot on January 10, 1987, and they have 2 children together, daughters Emily and Julia. The family lives in the famous Anne Haven mansion, originally built by Anne Lupton and Frank Harrison, the heirs to the Coca-Cola company. Bob Corker and his wife Elizabeth equally have several grandchildren.
