The iconic Chucky story started in 1988 with the supernatural horror film, Child’s Play, the first entry in the film series. It told the story of a serial killer Charles Lee “Chucky” Ray (Brad Dourif) who, mortally wounded and at the point of death, transfers his soul into a Good Guy child-sized doll via voodoo. The doll was found by a homeless peddler and was subsequently purchased by Karen Barclay () for her little son, Andy (Alex Vincent) as a birthday gift. Through Chucky, Ray continues his killing spree, in the cutest form imaginable.

Since then, there have been six installments in the film series, including Child’s Play 2 (1990), Child’s Play 3 (1991), Bride of Chucky (1998), Seed of Chucky (2004), Curse of Chucky (2013) and Cult of Chucky (2017). In 2019, Chucky became a star of both a Child’s Play movie reboot, developed by MGM, as well as the TV series, Child’s Play: The TV Series, bringing back the hunger for every form of ’80s and ’90s nostalgia.

Now that Chucky, one of the scariest dolls in horror movie history is finally making the move from the big to the small screen, Heightline brings to you 5 interesting things to know about the killer doll TV show.

Child’s Play TV Series: 5 Things to Know about the Killer Doll TV Show

1. The Series Would Be Led In Large Part By the Original Creative Team

The first Chucky film, Child’s Play (1988) was created by Don Maccini and produced by his longtime collaborator, David Kirschner. With the success of the film – it grossed more than $44 million at the box office against a budget of $9 million, besides rave critical reviews – a film franchise was birthed. In turn, all six sequels have been written and produced by Maccini and Kirschner respectively and feature the villain we have all come to love, even though the franchise has been taken in different thematic directions over the years.

As earlier mentioned, there are 2 different Chuckys in 2019; the movie reboot and the TV series. However, the original creative team, Mancini and Kirschner are only in charge of the TV series development and not the reboot. This could be because they don’t own the movie rights to the reboot just like they don’t for the original 1988 movie.

Movie rights or not, we are glad the brains behind the killer doll would be with us through the TV series. This means that the network television would feature the authentic version of Chucky, complete with all the personality traits that fans are familiar with. Nick Ancosta who created Syfy’s Channel Zero would executive-produce the project this time. Child’s Play: TV Series will air on Syfy and will be produced by Universal.

2. Child’s Play: TV Series Will Tap Into Its Roots

While the series creators promise that this Chucky story would be a whole new ground, one that would allow us to explore Chucky’s character with a depth that is uniquely afforded by the television series format, they have also assured fans that Child’s Play: TV Series will stay true to its original vision that has terrorized moviegoers for over three decades. It will take us back to its roots, especially the first two movies – Child’s Play (1988) and Child’s Play 2 (1990).

Additionally, for the first time in decades, the term Child’s Play would be used in the title. All Chucky films since 1998 entry have only used the name Chucky in the title, and not the original name. What could be more confirming of the series staying true to its form than this?

3. It Assembles an All-New Character

Brad Dourif, the original Chucky voice is one of those . To retain the original horror scare, he would return for the series to voice the iconic doll just like he has done in previous years.

Besides Dourif’s Chucky, Child’s Play: TV Series assembles a bunch of new characters including children. This somehow makes it more interesting than the Child’s Play remake, which opened in theatres on June 21, 2019. There is also a good chance that we will get to see a few old-timers like Tiffany (), Nica Pierce (Fiona Dourif), and even Andy (Alex Vincent).

4. Child’s Play: TV Series Release Date

The original title for the series is Chucky which is, however, tentative, and could change by the time it finally starts its run. While a release date has not been confirmed, it is set for a 2020 debut. The show will be eight-hour-long to start with though the run time has not been announced. We do hope that this attempt at a horror franchise coming to TV lasts.

5. The Series Storyline

Wondering what the series would be about? The storyline will be within the existing canon and continues after the events of the last Chucky entry, Cult of Chucky (2017). Moreover, it would probably include a lot of character backstories.
