Of recent, America’s political scene has turned very interesting in many ways. One of the few people that have contributed in making it such is Former governor of New Jersey, Chris Christie, a man who has also served as a federal prosecutor and political commentator and is in the Republican party.
Chris Christie’s Bio
Christie was born on 6 September 1962 in Newark. Nevertheless, it was in Livingston that he was raised. Of Italian, German, Scottish, and Irish descent, Christie’s family left Newark for Livingston, New Jersey when he was only 5 as a result of the Newark riots of 1967.
He got his education from Livingston High School, from where he moved to the University of Delaware where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in political science. Next, he moved to Seton Hall University School of Law.
Christie got into the political scene pretty early in life as a moderate Republican. In 1995 he decided to take a shot at the state assembly but he lost massively. Since the defeat, he decided to stay off running for offices but played as a party politician. He was a major fundraiser for George W. Bush during the 2000 presidential campaign.
After winning the election, Bush nominated Chris Christie for the United States Attorney for New Jersey. Although he didn’t have much experience, he was able to achieve a lot in the office recording 130 convictions.
It was thanks to this that he was able to be easily accepted when he came out to run for the Governorship election of New Jersey in 2009. And as many expected, he won the race with no sweat making him the 55th Governor of New Jersey. He decided to run again in 2013 and this time again, he won with no problem after he defeated Democratic nominee Barbara Buono in the November 2013 election.
During the 2016 American election, Christie contested to become the President of the United States. After what has been described as one of the most brutal campaigns in American history, he lost the Republican ticket to Donald Trump.
Interestingly, as expected by many, the former New Jersey Governor was unable to secure the Republican nomination, but what no one saw coming was his endorsement of Donald Trump, which many saw as opportunism. This triggered a campaign that called on him to resign.
At the end of his tenure, Christie was being referred to as the least popular Governor to have governed the state. His time as a governor was overshadowed by various scandals and controversies that when he announced that he was vying for the first office in the country many were left shocked.
One of the most vicious struggles he had in office was his battle with teachers in the state. Another that almost rocked his administration was the Beachgate in which he was captured on Photo with his family at the beach when there was a government shutdown. There was also the Bridgegate scandal that he got involved in when he ordered the closure of the lane from Fort Lee, New Jersey, to the George Washington Bridge. He did this because the Mayor of Fort Lee refused to endorse him for reelection.
After Chris Christie, the Republicans lost the state to the Democratic candidate, Phil Murphy who defeated Kim Guadagno. This loss was said to be as a result of the failure of Christie. Although Guadagno tried distancing the then governor from the campaign, it still did little because the governor had already lost popularity.
He left office with the worst approval rating for any US governor in the past 20 years, with only 17% approval rating to the job he did.
Wife and Family
When he was a student of the University of Delaware, Christie met a woman who was also a student, Mary Pat Foster and they began dating. In 1986, the two got married. That was 2 years after Christie graduated.
Chris and Mary Pat Foster who was born in 1963 have four children; Andrew who was born in 1993, Sarah (1996), Patrick (2000) and Bridget who was born in 2003. The family still lives in New Jersey.
