Boy Band Exo has remained active since its inception and is gradually taking over Asia. The South Korean-Chinese band was created by SM Entertainment and is based in Seoul. With nine distinguishing members, the band has gone places and has to its name a lot of recognition and accolades, assuming a prestigious pedestal in K-Pop music. Not only K-Pop, Exo also integrates other genres like electropop, R&B, hip pop, and pop.

Known for their hit song Growl, the group has gone on several tours across the globe and garner tons of fans while at it. The Formation of Exo

Exo members consists mainly of Chinese and South Korean boys of the same age bracket. After its formation in 2012, the band was initially made up of twelve members divided into two groups, Exo K and Exo M. Exo K was made up of Suho, Baekhyun, Chanyeol, D.O., Kai, and Sehun while Exo M consisted of Xiumin, Lay, Chen, and former members Kris, Luhan, and Tao. However after some squabbles with the law, three members; Kris, Luhan, and Tao left the Exo family in 2014 and 2015, leaving behind nine others.

Present day Exo now includes Kai, D.O., Xiumin, Chanyeol, Suho, Chen, Sehun, Lay and Baekhyun. Although they sing and perform together, Exo members are also engaged individually as they all combine their solo careers with the overall brand. Moreso, another sub group Exo-CBX made up of Chen, Baekhyun, and Xiumin exists within the Exo family.

Suho

Suho the lead vocalist of the boy band was the first to get signed with SM Entertainment in the year 2006. He was born Kim Jun-myeon on May 22, 1991. Suho mostly speaks on the group’s behalf and is said to be the best when it comes to public speaking. He attended Whimoon High School and also attended the Korean National University of Arts. Asides from singing, Suho has appeared in movies like One Way Trip, Student A., as well as several Korean series.

Kai

Born Kim Jongin on January 14, 1994, Kai is not only a singer but also an actor and a model. He is the second member to join SM Entertainment and is also Exo’s lead dancer. Growing up in Suncheon, South Jeolla, South Korea where he was born, his inclination to the performing arts started at a young age. Seeing his son’s potentials, Kai’s father encouraged him to walk the entertainment path and also helped him scout for opportunities in the field. Kai joined the SM Entertainment family in 2007 after nailing his auditions with the company that year. He signed a contract with them that same year.

Chanyeol

Chanyeol was the third to join SM Entertainment as a trainee in 2008. He was born Park Chan Yeol on November 27, 1992. Chanyeol nurtured his inclination to music from a young age learning musical instruments like guitar and drums, after watching popular School of Rock comedy movie. He is a songwriter and is part of the writers of EXO’s Promise track on their Love Me Right album.

Sehun

He became a trainee with SM Entertainment in 2008, just like Chanyeol. He was born Oh Se Hun on April 12, 1994. Sehun auditioned four times before he finally got a slot with SM. He is close friends with Suho leader of the group.

D.O

D.O was born Doh Kyungsoo on January 12, 1993. He became a part of SM in 2010. After its first formation, he was formerly a member of the subgroup Exo K. He is not only a vocalist for the band; D.O has made many appearances in Korean movies and series.

Baekhyun

Baekyun nicknamed Bacon joined the SM family in 2011. He was born Byun Baek-hyun and hails from Bucheon, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea. Baekyun started singing at a very young age of 11 and chose to explore the world of music as his career. He is also a member of Exo subunit, EXO-CBX and is equally a songwriter and an actor.

Xiumin

Born on March 26, 1990, Xiumin is the oldest member of the band and is also a member of EXO sub unit Exo CBX alongside Baekyun and Chen. He is an alumnus of Catholic Kwandong University. Apart from music, Xiumin is also good in Taekwondo and Kendo. As a matter of fact, he has black belts in the respective arts.

Chen

Also a member of Exo-CBX. Joining SM in 2011, Chen was the last member to join Exo-M. He was born Kim Jon Dae on September 21, 1991. Chen made his debut with Exo in 2012 and has established himself as one of the best high notes singer over the years. In 2014, he became a part of SM the Ballad, one of SM Entertainment’s music projects.

Lay

Born Zhang Jiashuai on October 7, 1991, Lay later changed his name to Lay Zhang. He attended a high school attached to Hunan Normal University. After winning his auditions with SM Entertainment in 2008, he proceeded for his training and made his debut with Exo in 2011. He has appeared in a lot of movies and series.
