(G)I-DLE is a Korean six-girl group created by Cube Entertainment in 2018. The group is popular for the talents and versatility of its members as they are highly involved in the creative process of every work they churn out. They write and compose their songs and also come up with most part of their choreography which is a departure from the female idol stereotype in Korea. The girls made their debut on the 2nd of May 2018 with the extended play (EP) titled I AM.

The group consists of six members – Soyeon, Miyeon, Minnie, Soojin, Yuqi, and Shuhua.

1. So-Yeon

Her birth name is Jeon So-Yeon and she was born on the 26th of August 1998. She is the leader of the girl group and is the main rapper, lead dancer and vocalist. She joined Cube Entertainment as a trainee in 2014 and represented them at Produce 101. Before she became a part of the girl group, she debuted as a solo artist and released two singles.

2. Miyeon

She was born Cho Mi-Yeon on the 31st of January 1997. Miyeon is the main vocalist in the group was trained by YG Entertainment between 2010 and 2015. She was supposed to debut with BlackPink but was let go before the debut.

3. Minnie

Her birth name is Minnie Nicha Yontararak and she was born on the 23rd of October 1997. Before she became a part of the group, she was a Rising Star Cosmetics model. She is the lead vocalist of (G)I-DLE.

4. Soojin

Born Seo Su-jin on the 9th of March 1998, she was about to debut with the girl group named VIVIDIVA before they disbanded in 2016. She is the main dancer, rapper and vocalist in (G)I-DLE.

5. Yuqi

She was born Song Yu Qi on the 23rd of September 1999. She is one of the youngest in the group and was also a Rising Star Cosmetics model. Song Yu Qi is a lead vocalist and dancer in the group.

6. Shuhua

Her birth name is Yeh Shuhua and she was born on the 6th of January 2000. She is the youngest in the group and a vocalist, as well as a Rising Star Cosmetics model.

Before their debut, (G)I-DLE members were revealed to the public through Dingo Music’s dance busking in Hongdae Seoul. Their performance had more than 2 million views on YouTube and later became the video with the most combined views for the “Dance” category and 2nd most viewed video for “Live”, “Entertainment” and “Dance categories.

1. Authenticity

There is good quality and authenticity in the kind of music produced by the girl band and they have received several praises for this. Even their names in the group are their original birth names. Asides contributing to their songwriting and arrangements, choreography and outfit production, they have also been praised for being diverse, bold and unafraid to try something different.

2. Songs by (G)I-DLE

(G)I-DLE has released 3 extended plays that have done well on various charts. Their first EP titled I AM peaked at #6 in Korea and #5 on US World. Their second EP I Made peaked at #2 in Korea and #5 in the US. Their third EP titled Latata peaked at #5 in Japan and #15 on Japan Hot. They have had collaborations like “Follow Your Dreams”, “Upgrade”, “Mermaid”, “Young & One” and “Pop/Stars”

The successes of their songs have been commended, especially because they are not from the “big three” record labels. They have been dubbed the ‘rookie monster’ of 2018 and were ranked on the top of the list as the best new K-pop group of 2018 by Billboard.

3. Awards and recognitions

On the 24th of July 2018, they won their first award at Brand of the Year Awards for “Female Rookie Idol of the Year”. For the rest of 2018, they won several rookie awards in various music award shows which include Gaon Chart Music Awards, Asia Artist Awards, Melon Music Awards, Golden Disc Awards, and Genie Music Awards.

(G)I-DLE also had their first music show win on The Show by SBS MTV.

The group was appointed as Seoul Metropolitan City’s goodwill ambassadors alongside Park Jin-Hee, Yura and 8 other nominees. Their title as ‘City Ambassadors’ will be for 2 years. They were also named ambassadors for Korean Children’s Diabetes Association. They also attained more recognitions in 2019 after appearing on Queendom.
