Ever heard of Grace Lillis Gealey; Popularly known by fans as Grace Gealey? She is a famous American actress who is best known for her lead role in Fox’s musical drama series, Empire as Anika Calhoun.

Grace actually had humble beginnings as the offspring of deaf parents in the Cayman Islands but in spite of her humble backgrounds, she managed to break the shackles of mediocrity and emerge as a renowned actress.

Parents and Early Life of Grace Gealey

The celebrated actress was born as Grace Lillis Gealey on the 26th day of July 1984 in Butler, Pennsylvania, U.S; she was born to parents who were both deaf. From what we gathered, her father was born deaf and her mother lost her sense of hearing at the tender age of two to pneumonia which she suffered for a while.

Although the actress was birthed in Butler, Pennsylvania, she was raised in the Cayman Islands alongside her sister Faith Gealey-Brown by their deaf parents.

As a result of her parent’s condition, Grace was proficient in sign language before she can even talk. The budding actress witnessed how people treated her parents without any regards because of their hearing defect. It dawned on her young mind that people with any form of disability are sidelined and treated unjustly and she vowed to try and effect a change in how deaf people are treated in the society.

The former model is of American nationality and Caymanian ethnicity with her mother being an Afro-Caribbean and her dad, an American of European ancestry.

Her educational background has been traced to the University of South Florida in Tampa where she studied Theater Arts and got her first degree. While she was studying in the University of South Florida, she was able to communicate viscerally, this saw her thrive in her acting classes and, the ability has been attributed to her being raised by deaf parents.

After her graduation from the college, she got a place in the University of California Irvine’s graduate program for further studies. It was with this institution that she bagged an M.F.A in acting.

During her formative years on the Cayman Island, the budding actress did not see herself in the acting profession as careers in the banking sector along with working in the hospitality and tourism industry were more sought after on the Island. She then went into drama so as to be able to end up as a drama teacher in the future since education is one of the things held in very high esteem in the Cayman Island. Grace was satisfied with her choice until she met a freelance director who encouraged her to consider taking up acting as a life career.

After a while, Grace moved to New York City where she appeared in some Off-Broadway works. The promising actress performed in the production of Tartuffe and The Misanthrope which took place in Chicago in the year 2013. The next year, the actress was cast in the Fox musical prime time drama () as Anika Calhoun. In the series which debuted on the 7th of January 2015, she was cast side by side with Taraji P. Henson and Terrence Howard.
