Juan Martin del Potro is an Argentine professional tennis player who got the spotlight shining on him in 2009 when he defeated both (now #1 in men’s singles) and 5-time defending champion at the time to win his very first Grand Slam title at the US Open.

Juan Martin del Potro’s Brief Bio

Juan Martín del Potro was born in Tandil, Argentina on the 23rd of September 1988. While his father, Daniel del Potro, was a semi-professional rugby player with the Argentina rugby union, his mother Patricia Lucas, is a teacher.

Potro used to have an older sister who died in a car accident at the age of eight, he has a younger sister named Julieta. The tennis star is multilingual, he speaks English, Spanish, and a little bit of Italian.

Career

He began playing tennis at the tender age of seven and Marcelo Gómez was his coach. His talent was later to be discovered by former Italian tennis professional Ugo Colombini. Ugo stood with him throughout the early stages of his career and still remain his agent and friend to date.

As a junior, del Potro beat Marin Čilić and Pavel Tchekov to the 2012 Orange Bowl 14s title. He received wild cards thrice to participate in three ITF Circuit events in Argentina but he, unfortunately, lost in the first round of each. In 2005, he ranked #3 in the combined junior world rankings.

In 2004, he defeated Matias Niemiz to win his first senior match at the ITF Circuit event held in Buenos Aires. He won a tournament in Antofagasta later that year and also reached the quarterfinals at an ITF Circuit event held in Campinas, Brazil where he defeated Henrique Mello and Alessandro Camarco. Before 2004 ended, he recorded two more victories that saw his world rank rise from #1441 in August to #1077 in November.

That same year, he reached the finals in the Argentina Cup and as well as in the Campionati Internazionali D’Italia Junior tournaments. By 2008, he was in the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) list of top-10 male professional tennis players in the world. In 2010, he reached a career-high ranking of world #4 and after this achievement, he had to stay away from the game for some time due to a right wrist injury.

He came back fully in 2011 and still maintained his #4 position in the world. In 2014, he had to stay away from most of his competitions due to another wrist injury, which was on his left hand this time around. After his long absence from the game, he came back fully in 2016 to give two of his greatest career performances – first was against Andy Murray at Delray Beach and the second was at the 2016 Summer Olympics where he defeated both Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal.

Juan Martin del Potro defeated Marin Cilic’s Croatia in the Davis Cup Final held in Zagreb to secure Argentina their very first-ever Davis Cup title. In 2018, he defeated the defending champion Roger Federer in the finals to win the Indian Wells Masters singles.

Apart from tennis, the professional player also loves playing association football, in fact, he is a huge fan of Argentina’s Boca Juniors team and Italy’s Juventus. Juan Martin del Potro and Argentine-Italian international footballer Mauro Camoranesi grew up in the same town, they have been friends since their childhood days.

The Tennis star is not known to be married or to have fathered any kids yet. He has, however, been in a relationship with Argentine actress and pop singer Jimena Baron.

The mother of one and del Patro began dating in April 2017 but unfortunately, they parted ways in February 2018. Jimena gave their tight schedules and busy career as the reason for their split. She puts it this way: “When we first met, he loved my cooking and music, and he supported me a lot, but being in a half-hearted relationship was never an option for either of us. With our careers, we are both finding it hard and there is no point in having a tough time.”
