With so much expected of the soap opera following a sensational first season, producers of the Grand Hotel show have dropped a huge bombshell on its fans after it was announced that the show’s first season would be it’s final. The short-lived soap opera has only aired for one season from June 17, 2019, to September 9, 2019, and within that period, the audience enjoyed thirteen thrilling episodes of the show.

With about 74% rating by rotten tomatoes and 75% average audience score, Grand Hotel, which is an adaptation of the Spanish drama TV series Gran Hotel which aired on Antena3 and Sky Art 1, has some mind-blowing actors like Bryan Craig, Lincoln Younes, and Denyse Tontz thrilling viewers with their acting skills. Others in the show also include Wendy Raquel Robinson, Shalim Ortiz, Feliz Ramirez, Anne Winters, Justina Adorno, and Chris Warren. But why was the summer soapy drama series viewed by over 3 million people canceled? You will find out below but first, let’s have a recap of what the series was all about as well as its production.

Grand Hotel’s Plot, Production and More

The show Grand Hotel, developed by Brian Tanen, centers around the Mendoza’s family and their hotel located in Miami Beach. The Riviera Grand Hotel stood as the last standing family-owned hotel in its location. Santiago Mendoza, his second wife Gigi, and his grown-up kids take center stage of the show along with the staff of the hotel.

The development of the Grand Hotel began on November 21, 2017, following ABC’s decision to make its own American adaptation of the Spanish soap opera Gran Hotel. ABC then announced on February 2, 2018, that it had given the show a plot order and was ready for production. Ken Olin was then hired to direct the pilot episode of the show as announced on February 23, 2018. Teresa Fernández Valdés and Ramón Campos who were producers of the original Spanish soap opera then joined the show as part of its executive producers. And following the hiring of two of Gran Hotel producers, the show was then announced to premiere sometime in the spring of 2019. Its premiere date was later shifted and it went on to premiere on June 17, 2019. The show then aired on Mondays on the ABC Network by 10 pm.

Talking about the filming of the show, Grand Hotel had its first shot in Miami, Florida. It took three weeks for the principal photography of the pilot episode to be completed, all of which was done in March 2018 at Fontainebleau Hotel. After shooting the pilot episode, the show’s filming was taken to Los Angeles. There, a replica of the Fontainebleau Hotel was created and the rest of the episodes were filmed there.

Why Grand Hotel was Cancelled After Season 1

After the conclusion of the first season of the Grand Hotel, anticipation for the show’s follow-up season grew. Fans of the show were, however, disheartened by the unfortunate news of Grand Hotel’s cancellation. Surely, there must be a reason why the show was canceled after just airing for a single season and leaving its viewers in an unending suspense.

Executive-produced by Eva Longoria and Ramón Campos among others, the much-watched primetime sudser which starred Roselyn Sanchez and Demian Bichir playing as Gigi and Santiago Mendoza, owners of the famed Riviera Grand hotel, was not cancelled because it did not have enough views, the show averaged about 2.8 million views weekly and ranked ninth among all ABC programs based on weekly views. Its ratings were not bad either, its single-season was rated 6.9/10 on IMDb and 7.4% on Rotten Tomatoes.

After the finale of its first season, preparations for a second season began almost immediately but disappointment hit everyone when ABC Studios announced on October 1, 2019, that it would seize to produce and air the show, rendering its first season to be its last season. So far, neither ABC nor other production companies involved in producing the show have given details on why the show was canceled.
