His skills in music led him to join a Latin band as a conga player, a singer, as well as a classical guitarist. He also worked short periods as a ballet dancer, a weightlifting coach and manager at a bodybuilding gym. Prior to his acting career, Hector was at Ballet Arts Company studying dance, he spent 1962 and 1963 taking acting roles at Stella Adler Theater Studio but his big break came with the Obie award he bagged for his role in the 1971 Steambath.
