Bio

Hong Jin Young was born in Gwangju, South Korea on the 9th day of August 1985 under the star sign of Leo. There is little or no information on her background but it has been established that she has an older sister, Hong Sun-young with whom she grew up. The duo appeared on SBS’s My Ugly Duckling in 2018.

A delve into her academic history will reveal that she completed her higher education at Chosun University, one of South Korea’s oldest private universities. Therein, she earned a Bachelor of Commerce and a Master of Trade program and went on to clinch a doctorate in Business Administration in 2012.

Career Achievements

Jin Young has had a fulfilling career as a musician and occasional actress. Her music career took off in 2007 as a member of the Korean girl group, SWAN. Other members of the squad include Han Ji-na, Hong Jin-young, Heo Yoon-mi, and Kim Yeon-ji. At the suggestion of her agency (Core Content Media) CEO, she transited to a solo career as a trot singer, though she resisted the suggestion initially given that the genre is associated with old people and she was younger then.

In 2009, she released her first digital single, Love Battery for which she won the Mnet Asian Music Award for Best Trot Song. She followed it up with a 2010 release of another single titled My Love. The year before she parted ways with CCM, she let go another single, Boogie Man (2013). In November 2014, she released her debut EP, Life Note with the title song Cheer Up. Though the outing wasn’t as successful as could be, she still took home the 2015 Seoul Music Awards for Best Trot song. Her second EP, The Most Beautiful Moment in Life came in 2016 with the hit songs Thumb Up and Love Wifi both of which received deserving awards.

Since then, she has released other digital singles including Loves Me, Loves Me Not (2017), Good Bye and I Kicked My Luck Off in 2018 as well as a trot single about people’s experiences in Seoul which she entitled Seou(2018). 2019 saw the release of Love Is…, as well as her US concert debut. Hong Jin Young has also collaborated with other notable artists such as comedian Kim Young-chul with whom she released the single Ring Ring (2017) which earned them the Best Trot at the 2017 MelOn Music Awards.

While she has become a presence in South Korean entertainment industry for her musical punches, she first debuted in the scene as an actress with a small role on the set of the movie Who Slept With Her? (2006) That same year, she made a cameo appearance in the historical Korean drama Yeon Gaesomun, set in the seventh century. She has also had minor roles in other TV series including Lights and Shadows (2011) as Yoon Ji-hye and in My Secret Hotel (2014) in a cameo role.

While her acting profile could boast of only a handful of credits, Hong Jin Young has become a mainstay in television shows and has also won a couple of awards for her roles therein. She has either hosted some of them or even appeared as a cast member. Some of the programs she has hosted include Rumor Has It, Find! Delicious TV, We Got Married Season 4 which she was also cast on. Meanwhile, she was cast as a member in My Little Old Boy, the reality show Sister’s Slam Dunk Season 2, Living Together in Empty Room, and Kim Jiyeon’s Sweet 19 as well as a recurring panelist in such shows as Flowers, Ranking Women, and World Changing Quiz Show.

Although Hong Jin Young is regularly followed by both fans and the media, she has successfully managed to keep information about her personal life and relationship status private. Nevertheless, she has been in four serious relationships including one with soccer player Kim Jin-Kyu with whom she broke up in 2007 but is now single.

Jin Young has said she is not sure of commitment yet as she has never experienced any from her partners. After her love line with Kim Jong Kook on Running Man, rumors went flying that they are dating but nothing as such has happened yet. She was also virtually married to Namkoong Min in We Got Married but that is the closest she has come to being married.
