The proliferation of K-pop acts in the industry has seen new groups bring something different to the table that not only makes them memorable but helps them stand out. For “Infinite”, it is their modern-day adaptation of music and dance styles of the 80s and 90s.

Formed by Woollim Entertainment in 2010, the five-member all-male Korean pop group Infinite soon found wide fame with their release of “Before The Dawn (BTD)” in 2011. Their 2010 debut album “First Invasion” had struggled to position them properly in the market, however, their doggedness saw them come back strong the following year and since then, they have gone on to release several chart-topping hits, headline numerous concerts and win multiple awards to include the Gaon Chart Music Award and Mnet Asian Music Awards. Infinite: Members Profile

Infinite was originally a seven-member group of Sungkyu, L, Dongwoo, Sungyeol, Sungjong, Woohyun, and Hoya. Hoya and L however left in 2017 and 2019 respectively to commit to their solo careers. So far, let’s take a look at each member’s profile.

Sungkyu

5’10” Sungkyu is the leader and main vocalist of the Infinite group. Born Kim Sung Kyu on April 28, 1989, Sungkyu graduated from Daekyung University alongside band members Sungyeol. Hoya and L,  bagging a degree in Applied Music. He’s appeared in several musicals, dramas and has hosted tv shows an has appeared in a number of musicals including Gwanghwamun Sonata, Vampire, “All Shook Up, and Gwanghamun Sonata, to mention a few.

Dongwoo

Jang Dong Woo is the group’s main rapper, dancer and vocalist. He was a JYPE trainee for several years. He is a registered songwriter with the Korean Music Copyright Association. Dongwoo was born November 22, 1990, he learnt to dance from one of his two sisters.

Woohyun

Born Nam Woo Hyun on February 8, 1991, Woohyun has appeared in several dramas as well also making strides as a solo artist. He is the main vocalist in Infinite and sometimes doubles as temporary leader. Stevie Wonder is his hero.

Sungyeol

Sungyeol is nicknamed Kindergarten Boy. His younger brother Daeyeol is a member of “Golden Child” – another South Korean boyband registered under the same company. Sungyeol was the last to join the Infinite group, he had tried acting prior to it. Sungyeol’s birth name is Lee Seong Lee. He was born on August 27, 1991.

Sungjong

Lee Sung Jong was born on September 3, 1993, and has a younger brother. He is the lead vocalist in “Infinite”. He has hosted tv shows and is great at adapting girl group dances. In July 2019, he enlisted in the military.

L

Former member L was the face of the group and vocalist. He appeared in dramas like “Master’s Sun” and “Miss Hammurabi”. He was born Kim Myung Soo on March 13, 1992. He left “Infinite” early 2019 to go solo.

Hoya

Lee Ho Dong (now Lee Ho-Won) was born March 28, 1991. He graduated from Daekyung University with Sungkyu. He’s appeared in dramas and was part of several subunits. In “Infinite” he was main dancer and rapper. He left in 2017 after his contract expired. He’s now with Glorious Entertainment pursuing both music and acting.

 

How Many Studio Albums Do They Have?

Infinite’s debut album was “First Invasion” in 2010. They’ve since released six studio albums, two compilation albums, two live albums, six extended plays, and twenty-nine singles. Their 2011 single “Before “The Dawn (BTD)” from the “Evolution” album got them to the music chart for the first time. They made their Japan debut on November 19th, 2011 with BTD, going on to appear in several festivals and concerts in the country to the delight of fans there.

“The Chaser” a single from their third mini-album “INFINITIZE”, won them their first triple crown on M! Countdown, achieving a top spot on the charts for three successive weeks and prompting Billboard to name it the number one K-POP song of the year. “Last Romeo” was their first Billboard No.1 single. It topped the Billboard Twitter Emerging Artists chart, making Infinite the first Korean act to do so. They are celebrated for their stride in representing the next generation of K-pop idols.

Other Interesting Facts About Infinite Band

  • The group’s name “Infinite” was given by the president of Woollim Entertainment. It means “Without Limit.”
  • Their fandom name is Inspirit and official color is Pearl Metal Gold
  • Hoya, one of the groupmates who left in 2019, explained why he left saying his goals and that of Woollim Entertainment does not tally. He left after Infinite released their third Japanese album Air. 
  • They’ve won 35 awards in all.
