Popular and award-winning American superhero television show, The Flash, began as a spinoff from another superhero television series titled The Arrow, both of which are aired on The CW network in the United States of America. Since 2014 when it started running as a series, five seasons have been released, while the 6th film in the franchise has been announced for October 2019. With that said, fans are asking about the next film in the series and what seems to dominate is the question; is The Flash cancelled?
The Flash Series
The inspiration for The Flash came from the DC Comics character of the same name, who possesses superhuman abilities which he uses to protect his domain from Villains and criminals. Grant Gustin who stars as The Flash in the television series appeared as a featured star of The Arrow television series for just 2 episodes and received positive reviews for his performance. This prompted the executives of the show to come to a decision to make Barry Allen, also known as The Flash, the star of the newly conceived show and to make it a stand-alone show on its own.
In the show, Barry Allen is a Central City Assistance Police Forensic Investigator who was involved in an accident that transformed him into a superhero. The explosion occurred at S.T.A.R. Laboratory particle accelerator, and Barry – who was in his own lab at about the same time as the explosion, was struck by lightning and bathed in chemicals that had been affected by the earlier explosion; he was thereafter knocked out in coma for about 9 months, and when he woke up, he discovered that he possesses lightning-fast speed, which he would later use for the good of his community.
The CW television network show first premiered on October 7, 2014 – airing both in the United States and Canada on the same night. It had 23 episodes for the season and was watched by almost 5 million viewers. Season 2 began airing on October 6, 2015, and its viewership had dropped considerably to about 3.6 million viewers. By the time the fifth season began airing in October 2018 and ended in May 2019, the number of viewers had dropped to about 2.1 million.
Although the 6th season in series will soon premiere, there is not so much promise that it will change the fortunes of the franchise, bringing us back to questions regarding the future of the series.
Is The Flash Cancelled?
The Flash cast and crew were at the 2019 ComicCon which held at the San Diego conference center in July 2019 and while much of the questions posed to them were about the Season 6 which would premiere in October 2019, the question of whether the upcoming season 6 would be the last season of the television series was also asked, fans wanted to know if there would be an extension to season 7.
A prominent cast member of The Flash television series, Grant Gustin – who features as Barry Allen (The Flash) on the series while responding to the question of whether there would be an extension of the show beyond season 6, stated that the cast of the show were contracted for 7 seasons. He, however, stated that the thought that the show would soon be brought to an end is always at the back of his mind and that if that was the case, then so be it but he believes that the show could continue beyond the seventh season.
Critics and reviewers of The Flash, however, have a different opinion about the longevity of the program. The 4th and 5th seasons of the program received hard knocks from critics and audiences who believe that the villains in the show were below standards and that the plots and subplots of the show were at best confusing and not up to the initial standards set by the previous seasons.
Some other critics and viewers believe that the ratings of the 6th Season of the program would determine if there would be a renewal for season 7. They posit that if the ratings and reviews of the show increased considerably over the past two seasons, then a further renewal of the show would be a no brainer and a done deal.
