Some series have been on air for so long, and may obviously remain so across genres. In the Horror scene, the Halloween title is one of such. Since the release of the new film in the series in 2018, many have wondered if we are seeing another Halloween movie sequel. Yes, we are. Since it began in 1978, the series has sustained into becoming one of the most successful horror films both commercially and critically.
Dwelling on the story of Michael Myers, a serial killer who escapes a sanitarium 15 years after he murdered his sister to leave a trail of blood everywhere he goes. Since the first film in the collection, there have been 10 more entries and as it stands, there are more tales of blood and murder coming in the franchise.
Is There Another Halloween Movie Sequel?
Before the release of the 2018 film, the initial plan was to have more than a film shot back to back, but the idea was dropped to first see the reaction of fans to the 2018 film. The movie became the most successful film yet in the franchise, making a massive $255.4 million worldwide on a low budget of $10 million.
With its success, David Gordon Green who directed the film, and its writers including Danny McBride are coming back again with two Halloween movie sequels to be released back to back.
The first film Halloween Kills which is set to be released in October 2020 was first announced in 2018, it is supposed to continue from where the last film in the series left off; Michael Myers walks into a trap as he follows the Strode women to Laurie’s house. Once they successfully trap him, they set fire on the house, hoping it would lead to the death of the scary serial killer. The convenient bet is that this will not be the end of Myers, instead, it may give him a greater motivation to charge after Laurie, this time around, blood thirstier than ever.
The next sequel after the 2020 film will be released in 2021, exactly a year after the release of Halloween Kills and it will be titled Halloween Ends. What is not known, for now, is whether the 2021 release, based on the name, will mark the end of the franchise.
While we know Blumhouse Productions team working with the Green and McBride among others are championing the two films and we will see the return of many cast members from the 2018 film, the plot still remains unknown.
In What Order Should I Watch?
Just as it is with all other series, you can watch the Halloween movies following the release sequence. However, it is important to understand that not all of these films are as successful as others. While some could seem like utter waste of time, it is still good to watch and decide for yourself.
Here’s the order of release of the films in the franchise:
1. Halloween (1978)
This is the first film in the title which is also the most interesting. It is the first one to watch as it introduces us to Michael Myers for the first time.
2. Halloween II (1981)
The second is a worthy sequel as it maintains the tempo that is set by the first film. In the first film, Myers starts his chase of a young babysitter, Laurie Strode whom he follows to the hospital.
3. Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982)
This time around, the film does not feature Michael Myers, which takes away something great from the film although it was also quite successful.
4. Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers (1988)
The Halloween movie sequel after the Season of the Witch, featured Myers who is not to miss any other film in the series.
5. Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers (1989)
This is one of the worst films under the title, with a lot of things that do not get to work. Nonetheless, it is still worth seeing.
6. Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers (1995)
This entry makes an attempt on an adventurous ride backward to explain why Michael keeps surviving and will not die. In some ways, the entry worked but in all, it is another entry that did not achieve as much as it was expected to.
7. Halloween H20: 20 Years Later (1998)
Laurie Strode decides to change her location and take an assumed name but that will not stop Michael Myers from coming for her. It is one of the most successful sequels in the franchise.
8. Halloween: Resurrection (2002)
As far as many are concerned, this is the worst appearance on the series. Rightly so, the movie which is designed on a reality show premise failed to inspire even after featuring Tyra Banks and rapper Busta Rhymes.
9. Halloween (2007)
This time around, the film is both written and directed by Rob Zombie who instead of just continuing with the story, tries to give an explanation that is not needed on why Myers is the way he is.
10. Halloween II (2009)
The second coming of Rob Zombie was more fruitful. The 2009 Halloween movie sequel is one of the best in the franchise. Everything about the film works almost perfectly.
11. Halloween (2018)
Almost 10 years after the release of the last title, the next film came stronger than all others with a strong storyline that you would not want to miss.
