Science fiction films are beginning to take center stage in Hollywood with most of the films in the genre topping box office and movie charts all over the world. The genre employs the use of fictions and speculations which are science-based but not yet practiced in conventional science to tell stories and create movies. Among the successful films in this genre is the American Sci-fi film, War for the Planet of the Apes which is a part of the film series titled Planet of the Apes. The movie was directed by popular director, Matt Reeves who also co-wrote the film with popular screenwriter, Mark Bomback. The likes of , , Steve Zahn, , , Karin Konoval and Gabriel Chavarria portrayed the characters.

The Sci-fi movie is the third released in the Planet of the Apes series, preceded by Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes which were released in 2011 and 2014 respectively. The film was a huge success at the box office, grossing a massive $490.7 million globally on a budget of $150 million. It received a nomination at the 71st British Academy Film Awards in 2018 for Best Special Visual Effects and in addition to this, it has received four Saturn Awards.

Following its very positive reception and performance at the box office, the question on the minds and lips of many critics, fans of the film and lovers of movies, in general, has been whether or not a sequel will be released or not.

As we have mentioned earlier, War for the Planet of the Apes, is actually a sequel to two movies before it in the Planet of the Apes reboot series. The two movies include Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes which were released about three years apart – 2011 and 2014 respectively. Also, within the space of 3 years, War for the Planet of the Apes was released in 2017. It was first premiered at the School of Visual Arts Theatre in New York on July 10, 2017, followed by a 20th Century Fox general release on July 14, 2017. The storyline of War for the Planet of the Apes is based on Pierre Boulle’s Sci-Fi novel titled ‘Planet of the Apes’ which was published in 1963. It tells the story of a battle between the forces of apes and that of humans in the quest for the winner to control the earth. The film was distributed by the popular American film studio, 20th Century Fox.

It is worthy to note that the 2017 movie was praised for a lot of things, including the superb performances, its visual effects, musical score, cinematography, story and of course, the directing. The film also received a lot of award nominations from some notable award brands such as the British Academy Film Awards and Saturn Awards. Moreso, War for the Planet of the Apes received some critical responses from some popular review aggregation sites. Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 93% approval which is based on 334 reviews while IMDb aggregation site scored it an 8.18/10 as its average rating. Metacritic which bases its rating on a weighted average scale gave it a whopping 82/100 based on 50 critical views.

Coming to the question about a sequel, one of the lead stars of the award-winning film, Andy Serkis, revealed in an interview he granted to MTV in 2014, the possibility of a fourth release. Discussions on a possible sequel intensified in October 2016 and sometime this year, shortly after Disney bought over 21st Century Fox, the former announced that the Planet of the Apes film series was under development. We can hereby say that a sequel will definitely be released based on the announcement by the production company.

Moreso, lots of news making the rounds in the entertainment industry predicted that the sequel to the film, War for the Planet of the Apes, which is currently in the development stage, will be released in 2020. One of the things we can expect from the fourth installment is that it will be set in the same location as the previous ones.
