Josko Gvardiol: Footballing Career

Dinamo Zagreb

Season 2019-20

Josko Gvardiol made his senior Dinamo league debut on October 18 in a 4–2 win against Gorica. Furthermore, he replaced Mario Gavranovi in the 87th minute.

On November 2, in his second league game for the club, he scored the only goal in a 1–0 victory over Inter Zaprei.

Moreover, his goal made him Dinamo’s sixth-youngest league goal scorer.

Season 2020–21

Gvardiol came on for Mario Gavranovi in the 54th minute of a Champions League qualifier against CFR Cluj in August 26following Kévin Théophile-red Catherine’s card.

The game went to a penalty shootout, which Gvardiol converted, as Dinamo won 6–5. Subsequently, the team advanced to the third qualifying round.

In late August and early September, the media reported on the interest of recently promoted Premier League club Leeds United, whose manager Marcelo Bielsa offered €22 million to sign the 18-year-old.

Gvardiol, on the other hand, declined the offer and chose to remain in the Prva HNL and develop further.

However, on September 28it was revealed that Gvardiol had signed a five-year contract with Bundesliga club RB Leipzig for €16 million with other add-ons.

The price was the biggest for a Croatian adolescent, and the third-highest paid for a Croatian defender, after only Dejan Lovren and Duje Aleta-Car.

RB Leipzig

Gvardiol made his Bundesliga debut on August 20, 2021, playing the entire match in a 4–0 victory over VfB Stuttgart.

He soon established himself in Leipzig’s starting XI and drew attention with his excellent performances. Then, on September 15, he made his Champions League debut, losing 6–3 against Manchester City.

He was chosen to Bian’s 23-man squad on March 9, 2021, but was forced to miss it owing to a quadriceps ailment.

On May 17, he was nominated to Zlatko Dali’s 26-man UEFA Euro 2020 squad. Moreover, Gvardiol joined the senior team after losing 2–1 extra time to Spain in the Under-21 Euro quarter-final.

Senior Level
