His musical career began in 2002 when he saw Korean singer/songwriter and music producer singing “Champion” on a TV program. Psy’s performance inspired him to begin an internet search for entertainment companies; during his search, he discovered that SM Entertainment was having an open audition.

With the encouragements from TVXQ’s Donghae and Yunho and Trax’s Jungmo, Hee-Chul would later return to SM and in no time, he formed the group Super Junior, 05 (first generation of Super Junior) alongside other SM Entertainment trainees.

In November 2005, the group made their official debut on SBS’ Popular Songs where they performed their first single “Twins” as a twelve-member group. They would later release their debut album ‘Twins’ the following month and made it at number three position on the monthly MIAK K-pop album charts.
