She was brought up in a very large family by her parents, Howell Stouten Wayans and Elvira Alethia in the Chelsea neighborhood of New York City in a Jehovah Witness family. For her education, she went to Wesleyan University from where she graduated.
Before she began her career as an actress, Kim started out as a stand-up comedian in the early 1980s, performing in Los Angeles clubs. The six-foot-tall actress got one of her earliest acting roles in Cathy (1986) and then from 1987 to 1988, she was in A Different World. With many more works to her name, she appeared in Don’t Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood (1996) which became one of her famous works. Kim kept acting in the years that followed until 2016 when she appeared in the TV Series The Breaks. Before then, she was in New Girl (2014) and Reckless (2013).
