The Pakistan film industry may still be in her building stages but it has already produced a huge star actress, her name? Mahira Khan. By many standards, she is the most popular film actress in Pakistan. She made an inroad into Bollywood starring in Raees opposite India’s biggest movie star, Shah Rukh Khan. Mahira has gathered many coveted awards as she continues to build on her stardom.

Mahira Khan Bio

She was born as Mahira Hafeez Khan on 21 December 1984 in Karachi, Pakistan to a Dehli-born father Hafeez Khan who migrated to Pakistan after the partition of India. Khan has a younger brother named Hassaan Khan who is a journalist.

She attended Karachi’s the Foundation Public School where she wrote her O-level at the age of 16. In the following year, 2001 at the age of 17, Khan relocated to the United States, California to be precise. Her aim was to earn a college degree. She attended Santa Monica College in Los Angeles and then the University of Southern California. However, Khan never made it graduation and in 2008, she returned to Pakistan.

In her fifth year in the United States, Khan began a career as a video jockey. Before then, she had supported herself working at a Rite Aid store as a cashier. She quickly rose in VJing and in 2006 landed a gig as the host of Most Wanted on MTV Pakistan. Two years later, she began working for Aag TV where she hosted a reality TV show, Weekends with Mahira which featured celebrity-interviews and call-ins.

Though her VJing career enjoyed an immediate success, Mahira’s first passion was acting and in 2011, she made her debut Bol where she played a supporting role. Bol was both a commercial and critical hit, announcing Mahira to the Pakistan audience.

Her TV series debut in Humsafar would become the biggest break of her career making a star actress not only in Pakistan but in India. For her role as Khirad Ehsan, Mahira packed a number of awards including 2 Hum Style Awards in 2013, one for Satellite Best TV Actress and the other for Best Onscreen Couple (Drama).

Her next big gig was the drama Shehr-e-Zaat (2012) for which she scooped her first of many Pakistan Media Awards. Her role in the TV drama Sadqay Tumhare won her a Pakistan Media Award for Best Actress Popular (2015) and Best TV Actress in 2016.

Mahira’s next film after 2011’s Bol would be Bin Roye in 2015 for which she earned 4 Lux Style Awards including one for Most Stylish Actress (Film). She acted in Ho Mann Jahaan (2016). In 2017, Mahira made her Hindi film debut in Raees.

Her involvement in the film was subject to much controversy owing to the political tension between Pakistan and India at the time. As a result, she received threats from India’s Shiv Sena far-right political party and was also banned from promoting the film in India. The film was later released to a modest financial success, propelling Mahira to becoming one of the highest earning Pakistan actresses.

Mahira’s other films include social drama film Verna (2017), Saat Din Mohabbat In (2018) and Maula Jatt 2 (2018).

Family Life: Son, Husband (Ali Askari)

Mahira was formerly married to Ali Askari. They met in Los Angeles in 2006 and tied the knot a few months later in July 2007 in an Islamic ceremony. Mahira’s father against the marriage and fast forward to 7 years later, they separated and finalized their divorce in 2015.

Their marriage produced a son named Azlan Askari. She reportedly keeps a journal where she documents the thoughts of her son.

In addition to earning big from acting, Mahira Khan also mints as a brand ambassador. She has repped the likes of Huawei, Q Mobile, L’Oreal (she became the brand’s first Pakistan ambassador), and Lux.
