Martin Garrix is a famous Dutch DJ, musician and record producer, popularly known as the DJ who topped DJ Mag’s Top 100 DJs in the world list for three years in a row – 2016 to 2018. The young DJ has made a huge name for himself on the international stage and has performed in major music festivals such as the famous Coachella, Tomorrowland, Creamfields, Ultra Music Festival and Electric Daisy Carnival. His music genres are future bass, electro house, Dutch house, big room house and progressive house. As a DJ, his major instrument is the digital audio workstation. He is also a guitarist and the founder of StmpdRcrds.

Martin Garrix Early Life, Age

Martin Garrix was born on May 14, 1996, as Martin Gerard Garritson to parents Gerard and Karin Garritsen in Amstelveen, Netherlands. Garrix’s father used to play the guitar and even though he was never a professional musician, it was enough to make Garrix first fall in love with music and the string instrument. His dad is a big investor in Garrix’s music career today, from the moment Garrix decided to do music professionally, his father has always supported him, getting him the necessary musical gears he needed to practice. Like his father, Martin’s mother is also a music enthusiast, she is known to play the piano and also supported her son in his quest of becoming a DJ.

When Garrix was 8, he started learning to play the guitar. His father took him to Greece in 2004, where he attended the opening ceremony of the 2004 Summer Olympic Games in Athens. He watched DJ Tiësto perform at the games’ opening ceremony and at that moment, he decided within himself that he would one day love to venture in the profession as a disk jockey. When Martin Garrix was 14 years of age, he DJed at his high school dance. He graduated from Utrecht production school, Herman Brood Academy in 2013.

His Career

In the beginning, he released his first tracks titled BFAM and Just Some Loops, collaborating with Julian Jordan and TV Noise respectively. He released those tracks shortly after meeting with his childhood mentor, Tiësto.

In 2012, Martin signed his first label deal with Dutch label Spinnin’ Records. Soon after signing with the record label, he released his first track under the label titled Error 404, collaborating with Jay Hardway. Two years later, he performed at Ultra Music Festival, headlining the music festival as the youngest DJ ever to perform at the event at the age of 17. In the same year, he dropped the track Helicopter, which he collaborated with Firebeatz. The track ranked number one on the Beatport Top 100 Chart and stayed at the top of the chart for two weeks. Also in 2014, he released his debut EP titled Gold Skies on July 8. The EP contained hit singles such as Gold Skies, Proxy, Wizard, Animals and Tremor.

On August 26, 2015, Martin left Spinnin’ Records due to a conflict over the rights and ownership of his music. He also left MusicAllStars Management, the company that managed him at the time he was at Spinnin’ Records, he further filed a lawsuit against his former manager Eelko Van Kooten. In late 2015, Martin announced that he would be forming his own new record label.

Early in 2016, Martin Garrix announced the launch of his new record label, StmpdRcrds. He released his first track under his newly found label on March 11, 2016, titled Now That I’ve Found You. The track featured the vocals of Michel Zitronand John Martin. Later in 2016, Martin signed with Sony Music International. In 2018, he headlined the closing ceremony of the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympic Games where he performed as the closing act at the ceremony. Garrix performed the songs Forever, Pizza, Animals Like I Do and Together.

He racked up $19.5 million over the twelve months in review, from June 2016 to June 2017, earning himself the number one spot on the list. As the youngest DJ ever to play in the world’s largest nightclub – Privilege in Ibiza, Garrix definitely commands a good price. He has an estimated net worth of $35 million.

Martin Garrix is very much straight and not gay, he is presently dating Dutch model Charelle Schriek. His girlfriend, Charelle Schriek is a model and was born on May 13, 1991, in the Netherlands. She graduated with degrees in business management, economics and law, from Hogeschool van Amsterdam. She and Martin Garrix started dating back in 2017.

 

Even though he is not gay, the Dutch EDM phenom Martin Garrix pledged his love and support for the LGBTQ community in a letter he wrote as part of Pride Month, in 2017. Although many misconstrued his love letter to the Gay community to mean that he is also gay, the artist gave out his heartfelt support to those who are strong enough to speak of their orientation. In addition to his letter supporting gay right, Martin recently collaborated with the gay Jewish pop star, Troye Sivan on the hit single There For You.
