One can count the number of movie franchises that have sustained for more than 6 sequels apart from horror franchises. With Mission Impossible 7 on the way, the Tom Cruise franchise is showing no sign of either ending or slowing down any time soon.

The spy film franchise first began in 1996 following a TV series of the same name. More than three decades and six films later, the franchise has recorded more than $3 billion in Box office and favorable reviews. It has been revealed that the 7th and 8th films in the franchise are already in production. Here is everything we know about the 7th film.

Mission Impossible 7 Release Date

Following the release of Mission: Impossible – Fallout in 2018 which became the most successful film in the franchise commercially, Paramount Pictures announced in January 2019 that the next film will be released on July 23, 2021. This will be followed a year later by another film in the series which will be released on August 5, 2022.

Already, work has started towards the production of both films which would be made back-to-back.

Cast and Trailer

Because the film has just been announced, Paramount Pictures is yet to release a trailer. It is known that work has started on the production of the film but it may take until sometime in 2020 before a trailer makes it to the public.

As regards the cast of Mission Impossible 7, Hunt is hale and hearty and so we will see the return of Tom Cruise to play his legendary role again. The last time he took the role in Fallout, he sustained an injury but he healed from it fast enough to get back to work.

Again, we are sure to see the return of Ving Rhames who will take his Luther Stickell role which he has played since the franchise began. Benji who has been portrayed by Simon Pegg since the third film will also be back as well as to play Erica Sloan. whose first appearance in the franchise was in Fallout will also be back to play the White Widow (Alanna Mitsopolis).

While there are more who will return, it is not known if  will make it after missing out on being a part of the IMF team in the last film as a result of his Marvel Schedule.

Everything We Know About Mission Impossible 7

1. Plot

For the plot, you can guess that Hunt is going to run again. However, nothing concrete has been revealed about the coming film. There is speculation that will go bad and there may be some space action. Although we do not have so much details as regards the whole plot of the film, we believe that it will be linked in a way or more to the eighth film in the franchise. This is because of how close the two are scheduled to be shot and released.

2. Who will Direct the Film

Following the successes recorded with the last film in the series, Fallout (2018) and the one before it, Rogue Nation (2015) which were both directed by Christopher McQuarrie, CEO of Paramount, Jim Gianopulos, announced that the director is coming again for the next two films. The director is also the writer of the last two films.

This will be the first time that a single director is working on the film for this long. In fact, all previous films in the franchise before Gianopulos were directed by different people. Brian De Palma directed the first film while the second was directed by John Woo. The third and fourth were directed by J. J and Brad Bird respectively.

More so it is Skydance’s David Ellison who has been involved in the last three films of the series and will produce the next works.

3. Future of Ethan Hunt

IMF agent Ethan Hunt has been running since the first film dropped in 1996 and more than two decades later, he is still running. With age catching up to him, the question is on whether Cruise is getting too old for the adventure.

Because of this, there are already questions on the future of agent Hunt and of course, the Mission: Impossible franchise. The speculation is that after Mission Impossible 7 and 8, the curtains may fall on the franchise or at least on Hunt. Again, we have to wait and see the direction Paramount Pictures will take after 2022.
