What makes them all the more amazing is that there is always a mystery to be solved and episode after episode, these shows have kept us on our toes with intense, thought-provoking writing and top-tier acting, thus, giving us a reason to get to the end. Besides. who watches just one episode of a TV series these days, anyway? The streaming giant, Netflix controls the druglord saga of the crime drama arena through Narcos.
Crime shows often casts the best TV policemen and detectives, memorable characters with strong problem-solving skills which give us a look at crime from all different angles. Some of these shows include which focuses on inmates, Criminal Minds takes its fan through the depth of the minds of the worst of the worst while the long-running NBC series Law and Order: Special Victim Unit deals with murder cases and other crimes such as rape. However, others like Murder, She Wrote, The Mentalist have since gone down the memory lane as some of the best crime shows in history.
Narcos, the critical hit Netflix crime drama which first aired in 2015 relates the real-life stories of kingpins of the late 80s first in Colombia and now in Mexico. The former was based on the story of notorious drug kingpin who was known for the production and distribution of cocaine while the latter shifts focus to Félix Gallardo of Mexico. It also details the actions taken by the law enforcement as they battle in the war on drugs.
The first two seasons of Narcos sheds light on the rise of , following his life from 1970 to 1992. The third season focused on the events that followed the fall and death of the drug kingpin and continues to follow the DEA’s fight against the Cali cartel. This true-to-life account is action-packed and includes real archival footage of the era for an extra (frighteningly) realistic feel. The first series ended in 2017 with the third season that focussed on the rise of the Columbian Cali Cartel.
The producers gave a different twist to the fourth season. It was reset as a new Netflix original series, Narcos: Mexico with the focus shifting on the illegal drug trade in Mexico. That, however, does not cut down on the excitement and mystery the series presents.
The plot rivals the classic Godfather movies, taking a fictionalized look at the inner sordid world of Columbia’s most notorious cocaine-slinging gangster. Narcos has been lauded for being fast-paced, packed with brutal performances and compelling character development which made it a critical hit. It is also an insightful, addictive, and very high concept that you wouldn’t even dream of missing a scene.
Overview
Narcos is the brainchild of Carlo Bernard and Doug Miro who also produced the crime drama web television series. The term ‘narco’ is a word of diverse origins. In Spanish, it is an abbreviation for narcotraficante meaning drug trafficker. The United States epithet narc or narco refers to a specialist officer of a narcotics police force, such as a DEA agent. There couldn’t have been a better title for the hit show. Not even Escobar would have sufficed as the show has outlived the drug lords real-life event.
The Netflix show is really an insight into the drug underworld of the 70s and 80s. The first three seasons (10 episodes each) were set in Colombia, following the rise and fall of the drug lord, Pablo Escobar. Escobar was brilliantly played by Wagner Moura who portrayed the 70s drug kingpin showing the man as both tyrannical as well as sympathetic. After its first three episodes (season 1), the show became a hit on Netflix and has not lost any of its fervor going into its fourth season.
Narcos: Mexico set in Mexico went back in time to the 1980s when the Mexican trafficking world was a loose and disorganized confederation of small-time independent cannabis growers and dealers. The new original series meticulously charts the rise of the Guadalajara Cartel in that era as it explores the origins of the modern drug war by going back to its roots. It began at a time when the Mexican trafficking world was a loose and disorganized confederation of independent growers and dealers.
The series did not only shift from Colombia but the companion series also feature a massive overhaul of the cast, introducing entirely new cast. Despite longtime star Agent Javier Peña played by Pedro Pascal in the first three seasons vanquishing Escobar and derailing the plans of the Cali cartel, his character will no longer be needed in the coming series. Instead, a band of new cast, mostly of Mexican origin would come up. Rogue One‘s and Ant-Man‘s Michael Peña will join the cast as the show’s new leads.
In this series, you would witness the rise of the Guadalajara Cartel in the 1980s as Félix Gallardo aka El Padroni (The Godfather) played by Luna, helms and unifies traffickers as he builds an empire. Meanwhile, DEA agent Kiki Camarena (Michael Peña) chases him. Félix Gallardo, the founder of the Cartel, the first Mexican drug cartel was also one of the biggest narcos in the history of Mexico and the pioneer of the modern Mexican drug trade. He also ruled over Mexico-United States border corridors.
As Gallardo presides over his budding empire with ruthless efficiency, an undercover DEA agent, Camarena, a family man who moved with his pregnant wife, Mika (Alyssa Diaz) and young son from California to Guadalajara to take on a new post realizes his new assignment is no ordinary challenge. He gathers valuable intel through a series of informants around the Godfather and his cartel but was soon to discover he is in danger as he realizes he has completely underestimated the sophistication of Gallardo’s system. The show depicts the clash between them and the eve of the catastrophic Mexican war on drugs.
