K-pop is a musical genre that is gradually becoming a rising culture across many nations. This genre can be traced to South Korea were various solo and group K-pop artists exist and have gained massive popularity. K-pop artists are not only popular within South Korea but all around the world. K-pop originated in the 1900s and was birthed by popular genres such as pop music and hip-hop. This genre of music became popular in the 2000s. One of the well known K-pop groups is NCT which has grown to have sub-units. The NCT Dream is the NCT’s third sub-unit and all members of this unit are below the age of 19. How Did the NCT Dream Come to Be?

As mentioned earlier, NCT Dream is one of the subgroups of NCT. NCT is a boy band created by SM Entertainment in 2016. It was structured to include 4 sub-units. The 21 members of the crew were chosen from personal recommendation, street auditioning, as well as from SM Rookies – a group of artists under training at SM Entertainment who hasn’t debuted in an idol group and community entertainment shows. These selections began in 2013 and by 2016, SM Entertainment was ready to unveil its new boy group.

The subunits in the NCT include NCT U, the first subunit, which originally consisted of 6 members who made their debut on April 9, 2016 with the release of two singles; NCT 127, the second subunit, which debuted on July 7, 2016h of the same year; NCT Dream, the third unit, which released a digital single titled Chewing Gum on August 24, 2016, and lastly, WayV. WayV debuted with their single album The Vision on January 17th.

NCT Dream went on to release more singles such as My First and Last, We Young, Go and so on. Currently, the group is made up of 6 male vocalists. They were formerly seven boys until the ‘graduation’ of Mark Lee. The current members of the NCT Dream are Renjun, Haechan, Chenle, Jaemin, Jisung, and Jeno. Renjun

Huang Ren Jun was born on March 23, 2000, in Jilin, China. His Korean name is said to be Hwang In Joon. He attended the Beijing Contemporary Music School in China. Not much is known about his childhood. He stands at a height of 5 feet 7 inches and weighs 52kg. Renjun has been a member of the NCT Dream from the onset and was a focal point in the release of their debut album as he was the lead vocalist.

Haechan

Haechan was born Lee Dong Hyuck on June 6th, 2000, in Seoul to unknown parents but later moved to Jeju Province when he was age 7 and came back to Seoul when he was 12. He has no known sibling and for his education, he attended the Seoul School of Performing Arts. He loves playing the piano, listening to music, and singing. In addition to being NCT Dream’s vocalist, he is also their lead dancer.

Chenle

Chenle was born in Shanghai, China as Zhong Chen Le. His Korean name is Jong Jin Rak. He was born on November 22, 2001, and resides in Seoul with his mother. Her name and occupations are not known, however, he has an older brother. Chenle attends the same school as Renjun – Beijing Contemporary Music School. His height is 178.8cm (5’10″) while he weighs 58kg (128lb). He plays the role of one of the main vocalists in the group.

Jaemin

Na Jae Min is a lead dancer, lead rapper, vocalist and visuals of the prestigious male group, NCT Dream. Quite a handful for such a young shoulder but he does his best to deliver. He was born on August 13, 2000, in Seoul, South Korea and wishes he had a sister. Jaemin attended Cheongil Elementary School and later SOPA. He stands at a height of 5’10″ and weighs 60 kg.

Jisung

Jisung was born Park Ji Sung and came into this world on February 5, 2002. He was born in Seoul, South Korea and lived in Busan for about four years. Not much is known about his family and siblings but for his elementary education, he attended Mia Elementary School. He is currently on a show titled Dancing High. At NCT Dream, he serves as the main dancer, vocalist, and sub-rapper.

Jeno

Lee Je No is the lead dancer, lead rapper as well as one of the group’s vocalists. He was born on April 23, 2000, in Incheon, South Korea. He attended the Seoul School of Performing Arts for his educational pursuits. In addition to his love for music, he has a flair for the stage too. He is 5 feet 10 inches and weighs 58 kg.

Mark Lee

Last on the list is Mark Lee, an ex-member of the NCT Dream. Mark was a part of the group until December 31st, 2018 when he graduated into another subunit. He was born Mark Lee on August 2, 1999, in Toronto, Canada but lived in Vancouver. Mark Lee has an older brother whose identity (and that of his parents) is not known. He attended elementary school at Eonju Middle School and later went to School of Performing Arts Seoul where he graduated from in February 2018. While at NCT Dream, he occupied the post of main rapper and face of the group.

  • Awards

It comes as no surprise that this multi-talented K-pop group has won several awards and has been nominated severally for awards. Among their many awards are Gaon Chart Music Awards, Golden Disc Awards, Korea Popular Music Awards and Mnet Asian Music Awards.

  • NCT Dream Shows and Concerts

The group is a relatively young one and hasn’t had so much exposure in terms of shows and concerts. So far they have only had three tours and concerts which include SM Town Live World Tour VI (2017–2018), NCT Dream Show (2018), and NCT Dream Tour “The Dream Show” (2019).
