Rich Eisen’s Bio

Richard Eisen was born in Brooklyn, New York on June 26, 1969, and grew up on Staten Island. He attended the University of Michigan and graduated in 1990 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication. He started honing his skills from college, where besides studying a related course to his future career, he served as co-sports editor of the school’s magazine, Michigan Daily. Eisen was also a member of the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity.

Following his graduation, he worked as a staff writer for the Staten Island Advance until 1993 when he joined the Chicago Tribune where he worked for one year. In 1994, he added to his resume a Master of Science degree in broadcast journalism from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism. Duly certified, Eisen then took the road he had long envisioned; sports broadcast and has not looked back since then.

He worked in television as the Medill News Service’s Washington correspondent in 1994 before becoming a sports anchor cum reporter at KRCR-TV in Redding, California from 1994 to 1996. Shortly after, he pitched his tent with ESPN and was part of a duo with Stuart Scott on the network’s flagship program, SportsCenter. Following that, he landed a number of hosting gigs on the network and beyond. He hosted the ESPN’s reality series, Beg, Borrow & Deal, served as the host of Major League Baseball for ESPN Radio, guest host on The Tony Kornheiser Show and The Dan Patrick Show, and went beyond the sports world to host the ABC show Domino Day.

Rich Eisen left ESPN in 2003 and joined the staff roster of the newly launched NFL Network that same year as their first anchor. The football channel debuted in November 2003 with Eisen becoming the main host of the network’s flagship program, NFL Total Access until August 2011. Along the line, he extended his contract in 2010, the same year he launched his podcast, and also took over the hosting of the channel’s first pregame show, NFL GameDay Morning.

Furthermore, he helmed other NFL Network shows including NFL GameDay Highlights, NFL Network’s Thursday Night Football pregame, halftime, and postgame shows and special on-location coverage from league events such as Kickoff, Pro Football Hall of Fame, NFL Scouting Combine, NFL Draft and Super Bowl.

In 2010, the first ever podcast for NFL.com, The Rich Eisen Podcast debuted. Since 2005, following the challenge of Terrell Davis to compete in the 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine, Eisen has famously run annually.
