Sunmi was a two-time member of the popular K-pop group, The Wonder Girls as she went on a hiatus for two years before returning to the band. Sunmi was the group’s main dancer, lead vocalist as well as bass guitarist.

The Wonder Girls was a group established under JYP Entertainment. It debuted on February 2007 and was active until 2012 when the members took a break. It was originally a five-member band but became four at its comeback in 2015. The group is known for its hit singles such as So Hot and Nobody and Tell Me. 2008 was a breakthrough year for the group who also signed a contract with Creative Artists Agency (CAA) that same year. By the end of 2008, their earnings were grossing up to $9 million.

Who is Sunmi?

Sunmi was born Sun Mi in Iksan, North Jeolla, South Korea on May 2, 1992. She is believed to have been groomed from her late teens by foster parents. The whereabouts of her mother during her formative years are not clear, however, her father took care of her and her younger ones until he fell ill and couldn’t even move. He later died from his illness and Sunmi was adopted. She has always been an ambitious woman and worked vigorously to achieve her dreams. The singer attended Hwangnam Elementary School, Chungdam Middle School, and later Chungdam High School. She is currently studying for a degree in musical theater at Dongguk University.

Why Did She Leave Wonder Girls?

Her passion for fame and fortune drove Sunmi to begin to audition at musical talent shows at a very tender age. At age 14, she passed an audition with JYP Entertainment and began training soon after. She faced a lot of difficulties while in training but came out strong. She made her debut musical appearance with the Wonder Girls.

The group released their first single Irony in 2006 and with that, they began an illustrious career that would span 10 years. After Irony, they released several singles which paved their way into the big leagues. In January 2010, it was announced that Sunmi would be leaving the group for academic pursuits. She stayed with the group until February in order to complete scheduled events. After her departure, JYP announced that she will not be coming back.

However, she did make her return five years later but not before releasing her own singles as a solo artist. She began her solo career in 2013 with the release of the single 24 Hours, which was a chart-topping release that she followed up with the release of an EP titled Full Moon in February 2014. This also made its way to the number two spot on the Gaon Digital Chart.

On her return to Wonder Girls, she was part of the release of an album titled Reboot in August 2015 and Why So Lonely in July 2016 before the group disbanded in 2017 due to breakdown in contract renegotiations between JYP Entertainment and Sunmi and Yeeun.

Sunmi is very close to her family. She shared a special bond with her father who did everything he could to take care of them as a single parent. He suddenly became ill and died three months before Sunmi debuted as a musician. She has two younger brothers – Lee Seung Don and Lee Sun Dong – and Sunmi also shares a very close bond with them. After leaving JYP Entertainment and the Wonder Girls, the South Korean singer continued to work on her solo career. She signed on to MakeUs Entertainment and released a single titled Gashina in August 2017. A few months later, she dropped another titled Heroine. She also released another EP in 2018 titled Warning and went on her first tour as a solo act also titled in 2018. In 2019, she also released Noir and Lalalay.
