Contrary to some biographies making the rounds, Thandie was actually born in London, precisely in Westminster. For so many years, the public was fed with the information that the actress was born in Zambia. However, Thandie, in several interviews, confirmed that her place of birth is London and not Zambia.

Talking about her roots and nationality, the renowned actress is British by nationality and of Hungarian and black ancestry. The Beloved star was raised in London as well as Penzance, a fast-growing city in England.

Unlike most actresses who had a formal training in acting, Thandie holds a degree in Social Anthropology. She obtained her degree at Downing College, Cambridge, where she spent three academic years (from 1992 to 1995). In addition, she holds a certificate in dance which she obtained from the Tring Park School for the Performing Arts.

Thandie Newton is married to English producer, director and writer Oliver Parker. The sweethearts tied the knot in 1998 and share three children – two daughters and a son together. Their names are Ripley Parker (born 2000), Nico Parker (born 2004), and Booker Jombe (born 2014). Thandie’s daughters are named after German actress/singer/songwriter Nico (born Christa Päffgen) and Alien films character Ellen Ripley.

Popularly known as Ol Parker, Newton’s husband was born in London, England. He has been in entertainment since 1995. He banks as an author and film director. Famed for his 2018 musical film Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, Ol has also won for himself praises within and beyond the movie community as well as some nominations for his projects some of which include NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Writing in a Motion Picture Movies and BAFTA Award for Best British Film.

 

Thandie Newton’s Parents

The African-British movie star is the daughter of Nyasha Newton (mother) and Nick Newton (father). Her mother is a princess of the Shona tribe, an ethnic group in Zimbabwe while her father is a British artist and laboratory technician. The duo is said to have named her Thandiwe, which means “beloved” in Zulu, Swati, Ndebele, Xhosa, and Swati.
