The journey of The Irishman began back in 2007. However, it was in 2014 that we got a serious announcement about the film, and then in 2019, it is set for a release. The film went through some rather tough times before seeing the light of the day because the legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese who also directed and produced the film, already had what he wanted for it on his mind, the characters he wanted to use.

The problem, however, was that The Irishman cast members that Scorsese wanted for the work are majorly A-list stars and so that came with a huge cost implication which has been fingered as the main reason why Paramount Pictures which was interested at first in working on the movie pulled itself away.

With a budget of between $150 million and $170 million, the filmmakers contacted Netflix which was more than ready to finance the work and make it a Netflix movie. It is thanks to this that after an American release of the film on November 1, 2019 (it premiered at the New York Film Festival on September 27, 2019), it would then be released on Netflix streaming service on November 27, 2019.

Inasmuch as The Irishman cast members used were part of the reasons why the film went through some hard time in trying to get finances, they also happen to be among the main reasons why the movie which was adapted from the 2004 memoir of Charles Brandt, I Heard You Paint Houses, is an exceptional movie. Here is a quick look at the cast members of the film.

The Irishman Cast Members

1. Robert De Niro

One of the main cast members of the comedy-crime film is who has through the years, more than any other actor, collaborated in various projects with Scorsese. Apart from being listed as one of the producers of the gangster comedy film, he also takes the main role of Frank Sheeran who is popular as “The Irishman”.

An American labor union official, Sheeran was accused of being a member of the Bufalino crime family.

2. Joe Pesci

On his part, Pesci has also worked on a few movies with Scorsese; the 1980 film Raging Bull which got him an Oscar nomination, Goodfellas (1990) which got him an Academy Award, as well as Casino.

In the movie, Pesci portrays mob boss Russell Bufalino. One interesting thing is that since 1999, the actor has not appeared in too many films as he has been in semi-retirement. However, with his return to one of his few films since then, he has helped in making The Irishman an exceptional movie.

3. Al Pacino

The kind of movies that you will find , he takes the role of Jimmy Hoffa. It is rather surprising that he has managed to never work with Martin Scorsese but as it turned out, this movie is excellent.

4. Anna Paquin

Not necessarily the biggest of The Irishman cast members, the Academy Awards winning actress takes the role of Peggy Sheeran. The True Blood star appears as the daughter of Frank Sheeran.

Others who also appear as the cast members of the film are Harvey Keitel who takes the role of Angelo Bruno, a Philadelphia mobster, Bobby Cannavale who plays Felix “Skinny Razor” DiTullio, as well as Ray Romano, Stephen Graham, Jesse Plemons, Jim Norton, and American rapper among others.

At the end of the day, what the filmmakers did with The Irishman cast members is to mostly get actors who have made names for themselves for their gangster roles including the king of such movies; Al Pacino and others like Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci.

Who Portrays The Younger Version of The Characters?

Because the movie takes us back to events that happened in the earlier life of The Irishman, the cast members have to appear in their much younger days. To achieve this, the main stars were digitally de-aged in order to portray the younger versions of themselves as characters in the film.

Designed by Industrial Light & Magic, the technology works in an excellent way as without any hint of manipulation, actors appear as the younger versions of themselves. The technology is relatively new to the movie world and is expected to go a long way in changing the ways that films are done, although the extent to which it can be used is still not fully known.
