Joel Martinez professionally known as The Kid Mero is perfectly donning many hats. He is an encapsulated talent in the entertainment industry as a writer, comedian, TV personality, voice actor, YouTube personality, music blogger and Twitter personality. Though he is acclaimed for his artistic abilities, he, however, didn’t take the traditional career path of a comedian. The Kid Mero Biography, Age

The Kid Mero was born on the 15th day of May 1983. He attended DeWitt Clinton High School from where he graduated in 2001 and then from Hunter College in 2005. Before he took to his comedic side, he worked as a teaching aide at a school in The Bronx.

He started off by writing music reviews in 2012 for the Vice’s music platform until March 2014, with 69 published articles, mostly album and mixtape reviews to his credit. His first article was a review of Canadian electronic music duo Crystal Castles’ album III which was published on November 14, 2012.

In time, he developed his voice as a blogger and took it to Twitter, for a more targeted, punchier pace of humour and as a way to attract attention to his acts. Although he had to balance his day job and family with his creative urges, his desire to change the course of his future spurred him on.

On his new platform, he amassed a significant and influential fan base which includes the comedians Hannibal Burress and . They further encouraged him not to rely so much on the media as to give away all his best material free but rather to seek other outlets. Thus, his transition into television. He went from hosting a podcast to being the host of a popular television show and the rest is history.

Career

He shot into fame as part of the Bronx comedic duo, the other member being Daniel Baker who is popularly known as Desus Nice. While Baker is Jamaican, Martinez is Dominican, although they have the Bronx as a common factor as they were both raised there and are both Jews.

The twosome went a long way back before they evolved on Twitter. Although they have known each other for a very long time, the search for a better life and career separated them until years later when they reconnected on Twitter. Upon their reconnection, they discovered the strong conversational chemistry that existed between them. Subsequently, they decided to get together and further explore as well as utilize the possibilities their kind of chemistry could produce.

They came to our awareness in 2013 when they co-hosted the Complex magazine podcast, Desus vs. Mero which premiered on December 18, 2013. On the platform, the twosome proved their arts and skills by delivering smart commentary on the day’s news, politics and pop culture wrapped up in humor. The show went from a podcast into a web series and then to a TV show and ran through 46 episode until June 2018.

Besides hosting a podcast, the duo also had several stints on MTV. In 2014, they joined the cast of MTV2’s Guy Code for season 5 along with 11 other cast members. Several other shows where they have displayed their comedic gigs include Joking Off (2015), Bodega Boys (2015-present) where rappers were their frequent targets, and Wild ‘N Out with host . Furthermore, they have made numerous appearances on MTV2’s Uncommon Sense hosted by  where they discuss current events in politics and media.

The Kid Mero also had a voice role in the American-Japanese co-produced animated television series, Neo Yokio in 2017. The series was created by Ezra Koenig, the lead vocalist, and guitarist of alternative rock band Vampire Weekend, and produced by Japanese anime studios Production I.G. and Studio Deen.

While it seems the show which brought them to the limelight is firmly behind them, they are already prepping for a similar talk show on Showtime. It will become the network’s first-ever late-night talk show and is set to premiere sometime in 2019.

Family, Wife

He was born to Dominican parents and has two younger siblings; a brother and a sister. He often shares heartfelt posts about them on social media especially his sister who he said looked out for him. He also credits her with steering him on to the right path.

The Kid Mero is happily married to Heather Martinez, a white Jewish woman with whom he has four children; three boys and a girl. Heather is a teacher from New Jersey. The family of six live in Paramus, New Jersey. Off the screen, he is a family man and very homely. He usually gushes over his family on social media and often tells of how lucky he is to have his wife.
