Biography

Kaine was born on February 26, 1958, as the eldest of three children born to Albert Alexander Kaine Jr., a welder and his wife, Kathleen (née Burns), in St Paul, Minnesota’s most populated city.

A Christian by religion, Kaine grew up and had his basic education in the city of Kansas where his parents moved to when he was just two years old. He attended Rockhurst High School a private Catholic, Jesuit, all-boys, the preparatory school where he began to have an experience of leadership, serving as the school’s student body President before his graduation in 1976.

In 1979, he was admitted into the University of Missouri for his B.A in Economics which he completed in three years and moved on to Harvard Law School to obtain a certificate as a lawyer, a career he always longed to pursue from his early age. He graduated in 1983 with a J.D. degree and began to practice his newly found a career in Richmond, Virginia where he served for 17 years, specializing in fair housing law and representing clients who are discriminated against on the basis of disability or race.

Tim Kaine met his beloved wife Anne Holton in Harvard University, a short while after his return from Honduras where he went on a short missionary journey. Ann who was then a first year Law student at the university later graduated and served as the Secretary of Education for the Commonwealth of Virginia. When Kaine became governor of Virginia, she also became the state’s first lady.

Unlike her husband who is a Democrat, Ann is a Republican as she was raised in a family with a great interest in politics. Her father served as Virginia’s governor from 1970 to 1974 while her paternal grandfather worked in a small coal-hauling railroad as an executive. She attended an all-black school with her siblings at Virginia.

Tim Kaine got married to Ann at a Roman Catholic Church in Richmond, in November 1984 and they have been living together as a couple with their three children- Nat, Woody and Annella.

Despite his major rise in the political field, Kaine has been involved in lots of controversies one of which is whether or not he is gay. This speculation was sparked off by his comments about the LGBTQ rights when he described gay people as God’s beautiful diversity of the human family who should be celebrated instead of being criticized.
