She was born to Kenneth Perrine and Winifred McGinley. Her father was a former United States Army officer while her mother worked as a Broadway dancer. She grew up traveling the world as her father’s job demanded.

After Valerie Perrine’s high school studies, she enrolled in a university to study psychology but soon dropped out to kick start her show business career. She first worked as a topless dancer in Las Vegas. Around this time, she landed her first screen gig, an uncredited role in Diamonds are Forever (1971). The following year, the budding actress played the character of Montana Wildhack in Slaughterhouse-Five, a science fiction film adapted from ‘s novel that has the same name.

Her commendable portrayal of her character in this film opened the doors for more acting gigs to come her way. Valerie had what still stands out as her best acting role till date in her role as Honey Bruce in Lenny (1974). The role earned her the 1974 National Board of Review and New York Film Critics Circle Best Supporting Actress award, 1975 Cannes Film Festival as Best Actress, and the 1976 British Academy Film Awards as the Most Promising Newcomer to Leading Film Roles.

In the years that followed, Valerie Perrine starred in films like Superman (1978, as Eve Teschmacher), The Border (1982, as Marcy), Reflections in a Dark Sky (1991, as Caterina) and My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend (1999, as Rita Lindgross). In the new millennium, she recorded acting credits in a couple of films some of which include What Women Want (2000) where she played the character of Margo, The Californians (2005) as Lenora Tripp and Silver Skies (2016) where we last saw on her on screen as Ethel.

On television, Valerie Perine had her debut in The Couple Takes a Wife (1972) before Lady Luck (1973), Ziegfeld: The Man and His Women (1978) and a couple of other works which endeared her to TV series watchers. She then starred in other television series like Faerie Tale Theatre (1985), Sweet Bird of Youth (1989), Homicide: Life on the Street (1995), Just Shoot Me! (2001) and Lights Out (2011).
