His mother Kathlyn Corinne (née MacLean) was a school teacher as well as his father Ira Owens Beaty but he also worked as a realtor. His elder sister, Shirley MacLaine (née Beaty) is also an actress, singer, dancer, and writer. He studied at Thomas Jefferson Junior High School and later moved to Washington-Lee High School both in Arlington.

Warren Beatty was a star football player during his high school days, however, he also got interested in movies through several visits to the theatre with his sister. Encouraged by his sister’s budding Hollywood career, Warren decided to follow suit. Upon graduation from high school, he turned down several college football scholarships and opted to study liberal arts at Northwestern University. After just one year, he quit college entirely and moved to study acting at the Stella Adler Studio of Acting. Beatty started his acting career on television with minor roles in series like Kraft Television Theatre (1957), Studio One (1957) as well as a supporting role in The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis (1959-60).

The talented actor marked his feature film debut in the widely acclaimed box-office hit Splendor in the Grass (1961) which scored him a Golden Globe New Star of the Year award in addition to a Best Actor nomination. This was followed by roles in The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone (1961), Lilith (1963), Mickey One (1965), Kaleidoscope (1966) among others. Warren Beatty made his debut as a producer in the highly acclaimed biopic Bonnie and Clyde (1967), doubling as the lead actor.

This was followed by lead actor and co-producer roles in the crime drama Bugsy (1990) for which he received Best Actor and Best Picture Oscar nominations.

Following the abysmal performance of the 2001 romantic comedy Town & Country in which he starred in, Warren Beatty took another long break from acting. He returned as actor and director when he reprised his Dick Tracy role in a spin-off Dick Tracy Special (2010).
