Beatty started his acting career on television with minor roles in series like Kraft Television Theatre (1957), Studio One (1957) as well as a supporting role in The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis (1959-60).

The talented actor marked his feature film debut in the widely acclaimed box-office hit Splendor in the Grass (1961) which scored him a Golden Globe New Star of the Year award in addition to a Best Actor nomination.
