No one epitomizes longevity in sports broadcasting like Chris Berman. The quintessential commentator has been a mainstay at ESPN for over three decades.

Chris Berman Biography

Christopher James Berman was born on the 10th of May 1955 in Greenwich, Connecticut in the United States. Although he was born in Connecticut, he spent most of his early childhood in Irvington, New York.

Chris’ mom Peggy Shevell was at that time a reporter and also a researcher for the Times Magazine. His father James Keliner Berman was a Corporate Executive Vice President. Chris had a pretty decent middle-class upbringing, he was enrolled at Hackley school in 1970. He graduated from college in 1977 with a degree in History from Brown University where he acted in the capacity of the Sports Director of the schools’ radio station.

His first job was as a sports anchor at Hartford’s WVIT-TV. The job that shot Chris to national prominence was his stint at ESPN where he joined in 1979, just a month after the station was founded. He is currently the longest-serving worker on the network along with Bob Ley.

He is presently the host of ESPN’s first game show and after his 55th birthday, he signed a new contract for an unmentioned period of time. Upon the expiration of the contract, his deal was renewed to keep him at the station for the foreseeable future.

During his time at ESPN, Chris Berman has served and worked on numerous sports-related shows and anchored so many games. Amongst this numerous aforementioned shows includes the Sunday NFL countdown which he has hosted since 1985. In addition to the Sunday NFL, Chris also hosts Monday Night Countdown, The US Open and Major League Baseball to name just a few.

Chris was inducted into the Brown University Athletic Hall of Fame in 1991. In May 2007 Brown University conferred on him, an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree for his accomplishments in broadcasting.

Chris Berman was the first sports journalist to be honored with the Newseum Institute’s Al Neuharth Award for Excellence in Media. In 1995 and 2005, he was listed on The Sporting News’ Top 100 Most Powerful People in Sports and was inducted into the Cable Hall of Fame in 2015.

Chris Berman’s wife Katherine was a school teacher back in 1983 when they met and got married. She had to quit teaching to help raise the kids in 1985. Chris and Katherine had two kids; a girl named Meredith and a son Douglas.

Tragedy befell Chris Berman and his family in the early days of May 2017 when Katherine Berman, 67 died of blunt force trauma and drowning. She lost her life when her Lexus SUV crashed into another car and veered viciously off the road and landed on its top into a nearby lake. The driver of the other car, Edward Bertulis aged 87 sustained multiple injuries and was rushed to a hospital after his own car ran into a utility pole. He passed away at the hospital.

Investigations into the incidents revealed that Edward Bertilus was on his way back from his wife’s gravesite and was not putting on his seatbelt at the time of the accident.

Chris only found out hours later about the accident when a group of cops broke the news to him while he was watching his favorite baseball team the San Francisco Giants play in Queens. Katherine died just a day before her husband Chris’ 62nd birthday.
