He may now be best known as a television personality but Rob Dyrdek has his skateboarding talents to thank for his rise to fame and wealth. Dyrdek has also proven to be quite a shrewd businessman with an enviable diversified portfolio; he has invested in the UFC as well as racehorses and even has his own skateboarding competition enterprise called Street League Skateboarding that boasts having the biggest paycheck for its champions. Now retired from pro skateboarding, Dyrdek spends his time either running his businesses or hosting TV shows that he also produces.

How Rob Dyrdek’s Skateboarding/Business Career Blossomed with DC Shoes

For as long as he can remember, Rob Dyrdek has loved skateboarding, during his childhood years growing in the Kettering City of Ohio, Dyrdek spent the bulk of his time skateboarding and when he was not, he was thinking of new tricks to better his talent. All young Rob wanted was to one day become a professional skateboarder. Rob at 11 years old got to meet pro-skateboarder Neil Blender who bought him his own skateboard.

Blender would then get 12-year-old Dyrdek signed to the same sponsorship company that he was on beginning a journey to pro skateboarding for the youngster. The more Dyrdek got involved in the world of skateboarding the deeper he wanted to go, thus before he could make it to high school graduation, 16-year-old Dyrdek dropped out and moved to California to better his chances at the sports.

In California, luck smiled on Rob Dyrdek when he signed with Droors Clothing (later called DC Shoes) he was among the first skateboarders to be sponsored by the company and his relationship with them would prove to be pivotal in his career. As part of DC Shoes, Dyrdek’s entrepreneurial side blossomed as he was able to get involved in shoe designing and marketing.

On the skateboard, Dyrdek proved to be super talented, the record books hold that he has set 21 different Guinness World Records, however, it was a commercial idea that he birthed for DC Shoes that opened him up to the endless opportunities on TV. Dyrdek was the brainchild behind the idea for one of their skate videos that went viral and attracted the attention of media powerhouses including MTV. The product of his engagement with MTV was the reality TV show Rob & Big which debuted in 2006. It was the first of many media projects to come for the pro skateboarder.

For as long as Rob Dyrdek’s pro skateboarding career lasted, he was sponsored by DC Shoes, thus their partnership ended when he retired from active skateboarding in 2016. Dyrdek has long utilized his wealth of experience with DC Shoes to build a revered business empire.
