The actress was born Sutton Lenore Foster on March 18, 1975, in Statesboro, Georgia, although it was in Troy, Michigan that she was brought up by her parents, Helen Foster and Bob Foster who were people of middle class. She is the sister of the Tony-nominated actor, Hunter Foster.

Her father worked with General Motors, which saw him moving from place to place. Both Sutton and her elder brother got the encouragement of their mother to try their hands on performing arts and because of this, she was already auditioning by the time she was 10.

She had her education from Troy High School, in Troy, Michigan. However, she was out of school before she graduated. But then, through correspondence courses, she still went on to obtain a diploma.
