2019 has seen the release of some great films for both cinema and streaming platforms. With the marriage between a great director like Martin Scorsese and the Academy winning actors; Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, as well as Joe Pesci, the list only gets longer. That is evident with the 2019 film, The Irishman which is an adaptation of Charles Brandt’s 2014 memoir, I Heard You Paint Houses. With so much buzz already surrounding the film, the big question that remains is as regards when the film will get to be on Netflix.

The 2019 epic comedy crime film was first announced in 2014 as a project to be produced and directed by Martin Scorsese. Its history dates back to 2007 when the development phase started, but it was in 2014 that work fully began. Five years down the line, the film which featured some A-list Hollywood stars finally premiered on September 27, 2019, at the 57th New York Film Festival ahead of its United States release in November and then a digital streaming release.

With a budget of over $159 million, it came as one of the most expensive projects of Scorsese in his career that has spanned more than five decades. Living up to the expectations of any Scorsese film, it received wide acclaim for almost everything from the production to the casting, as well as directing and plotline.

When Is The Irishman Going To Be On Netflix?

There is obviously no doubt that The Irishman will be on Netflix. When it was first announced, it was indicated that the ace movie director, Martin Scorsese, was making the movie for the streaming service. Why this was entirely surprising to many was that even though Netflix has been working tirelessly to build up its originals, Scorsese has been a great advocate of the cinema.

The story behind the film and how it got to Netflix is not a straightforward one. Initially, it was supposed to be a Paramount film, under which Scorsese made his highly acclaimed 2013 film, The Wolf of Wall Street. However, with the inclusion of big names including and , as well as , Paramount and STX, the co-financier of the film began to drag their feet because of the financial investment.

As anyone would expect, the financial implication of the film shot skyward and the budget of the film went to as high as a projected $175 million. Subsequently, Paramount rejected the film, which as speculated was because of its huge financial burden. Left with little option, the filmmakers reached out to Netflix which was more than happy to provide the needed funding for the film.

According to Scorsese, with the movie business ever-changing, most places that provided funding in the past were no longer viable and because he still wanted to make a great movie, they reached out to Netflix which bought the idea more than any other traditional studio.

Consequent to this agreement between Netflix and the filmmakers, The Irishman will be made available for streaming on Netflix from November 27, 2019.

Will The Movie Be Released In Cinemas Too?

The Irishman will first appear in cinemas before it will be made available on Netflix. The initial release date of the film is September 27, 2019. However, viewers in the United States will have to wait until November 1, 2019, before they can finally see the over 3-hour long film.

That said, De Niro revealed that instead of the usual release, The Irishman will come on a limited release on the big screen. It will only be made available in some selected venues.

Although Netflix initially wanted its films to be released in cinemas and for streaming simultaneously, it has backed down on it and now gives a few weeks for some of its big works to first be in the theatres before finally making it on its streaming platform. It is thanks to this that The Irishman is making a release on both cinemas and afterward, on the streaming platform.

Even as Netflix is taking the competition right to the doorstep of Hollywood, it is quite fair for traditional movie lovers to have it on the big screen before it finally goes for streaming.
