The Last Airbender 2 was expected to be the second installment in a trilogy which had at its helm the talents of M. Night Shyamalan the American filmmaker of Indian descent who is known for the surprise and twisted endings of his usually supernatural fiction. Shyamalan is considered as one of the most brilliant writers to have ever graced Hollywood with some of his books including the Stuart series. However, he didn’t quite seem to get it right with his adaptation of The Last Airbender. Before sequels are released, a lot of factors are put into consideration, and these factors determine if a film will have a sequel or not. To learn more about the sequel of the 2010 film The Last Airbender keep reading.
About The First Last Airbender Installment
The first Last Airbender film was based on the events that took place in the first season of the animated Nickelodeon show The Last Airbender. M. Night Shyamalan who wrote the film’s screenplay, directed and produced the film learned about it from his daughter. She wanted to be one of the female characters on the show for Halloween and her choice piqued his interest. The animated television show features a lot of martial arts and elements of spirituality in the Buddhist faith. These two features of the show were key points in Shyamalan’s decision to produce a movie version. After engaging in research on the show which included watching the entire show and speaking to its creators, he decided to make the television show into a feature film.
When Shyamalan writer pitched the idea of the film to Nickelodeon Movies, the production house that was to produce the film, they were willing to spend more than $200 million on the film, but only ended up spending $150 million. The first Last Airbender film made $319.7 million from box office sales making it one of the top five highest box office films from Nickelodeon but the success it had at the box office was not reflective of the feelings of critics.
Regardless of the huge success it enjoyed at the box office, the first Last Airbender movie was panned by critics. At the Raspberry Awards which is known for its celebration of badly received films, the film won five Raspberries of the nine it was nominated for and is infamously known as one of the worst films that have ever been produced.
Shyamalan took credit for the failings of the film and the creators of the original show were disappointed with the outcome of the film. They had sought to give their own input but their suggestions were rebuffed. One of the biggest problems that arose with the film was its condensation of the twenty-episode season to be adapted to a less than 90 minutes film.
When is the Last Airbender 2 Movie Coming out?
When M. Night Shyamalan was making plans for the first Airbender film, he also drew a blueprint for two more films which will constitute the Airbender trilogy. The Last Airbender 2 was the running title of the film which was supposed to feature events that follow up with the story in the first film. However, the critical reception the film received has deterred any plans of the sequel being made. When the film had been originally released, talks for a sequel were already underway and its antagonist had already been picked. Summer Bishil was supposed to play Azula the villain in the second film. Bishil was expected to join Noah Ringer (who played Aang), Dev Patel, Jackson Rathbone, and Nicola Peltz as one of the principal characters. Patel took on the role of Zuko while the other two played the siblings Sokka and Katara respectively.
Other parts of the second film that had already been decided on was the tone of the film. The Last Airbender 2 was going to be much more somber than the first and was to deal with a much darker theme. The studio that had been ready to give $200 million for the first film was also ready to release the same amount for the production of the sequel.
However, the negative reviews of the first film led the production house to pull the plug on the making of The Last Airbender 2. Their decision not to do the remake was one that took a long time and eventually, people stopped talking about the plans for a sequel. The most recent information on a possible sequel for a feature film based on the Last Airbender animated series is Netflix’s announcement to make a live-action version of the film. This announcement was made in October of 2018.
