The 91st Academy Awards (2019 Oscars) is aimed at rewarding the best movies and performances of the year 2018.

The nominees for the various categories were announced in January 2019 and despite the fact that there would be no host for the ceremony, the show must go on. We take a closer look at some of the interesting details about the 2019 Oscars; the venue, award hopefuls, and every other thing in between.

Where Will the 2019 Oscars Take Place?

The venue for the 2019 Oscars is the Dolby Theatre located in the Hollywood and Highland Center shopping mall and entertainment complex. It is located on 6801 Hollywood Boulevard, Los Angeles, California. Since the theatre was opened in November 2001, it has hosted the annual Oscars ceremony and the 2019 Oscars would be no exception.

Who Will Win The Major Categories?

While a few of the nominees who made the cut for the 2019 Oscars hope to add to their trophy cabinets, several others are gunning for their very first gold statuette. Two movies The Favourite (2018) and Roma (2018) led the nominees’ chart with a total of 10 nominations each. We now take a closer look at the nominees of the major award categories.

The Academy Award for Best Picture

This award goes to the producer of the movie and is considered the most prestigious honor of the ceremony. For the 2019 Oscars, four biographical films were nominated in this category including BlacKkKlansman (2018), Bohemian Rhapsody (2018), Green Book (2018), and Vice (2018). Other movies nominated in this keenly-contested category include the historical film The Favourite (2018), the drama film Roma (2018), and the romantic drama film A Star Is Born (2018).

The last but not the least of the nominated movies is the superhero film Black Panther (2018) which was a box-office monster. Black Panther made history as the first superhero film to be nominated in this category and a win for the movie would mark a perfect climax, following the movie’s record-breaking outing at the box-office.

The Academy Award for Best Actor

Interestingly, 4 of the 5 nominees for this highly-sought category earned their nominations for their works in various biographical films; for his portrayal of Dick Cheney in Vice (2018), for playing Vincent van Gogh in At Eternity’s Gate (2018), for his portrayal of Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody (2018), and Viggo Mortensen for his lead role as Frank “Tony Lip” Vallelonga in Green Book (2018).

Others have all received multiple nominations in the past. Except for Christian Bale who won his first Oscar back in 2011.

The Academy Award for Best Actress

This category is also keenly competed as none of the 5 nominees has ever won an Academy Award in the past. It is the first outing for Mexican actress who was nominated for her lead role in the highly-acclaimed film, Roma (2018). This is also a first-time nomination for English-born actress who got nominated for her performance in the historical film, The Favourite (2018).

On the contrary, for American-actress who was nominated for her performance in The Wife (2018), this is the 7th Oscar nomination of her career though she is yet to record any win. Other nominees of the category are music star-turned-actress, who was nominated for her lead role in A Star Is Born (2018) and who got nominated for portraying Lee Israel in the biopic Can You Ever Forgive Me? The Academy Award for Best Director

This category could easily pass for the most diverse going by the nationalities of each of the nominees. Also, 3 of the 5 nominees are past Academy Award winners while the other 2 hope to clinch their very first statuette.

Highly-acclaimed Mexican-born director, Alfonso Cuarón got nominated for his work on the movie Roma (2018) while Polish-English director, Paweł Pawlikowski got nominated for his work on the historical film Cold War (2018).
