David Copperfield is a world-renowned magician whose contributions to the entertainment industry have earned him Living Legend status as prescribed by the United States Library of Congress.
The master illusionist, who has further been named the Magician of the Century and King of Magic by the organization governing magicians, is also the most successful ever with gross earnings in excess of $4 billion. He also has to his name, a star on the Hollywood Walk of fame, eleven Guinness World Records and 21 Emmy Awards from 38 nominations.
Bio, Education, And Career
On the 16th of September 1956 in Metuchen, New Jersey, David Seth Kotkin, known today as David Copperfield, was welcomed into the world by his Jewish parents; Rebecca and Hyman Kotkin. His mother, Rebecca, who was born in Jerusalem, worked as an insurance adjuster while his father, Hyman, who was the son of Jewish Ukrainian immigrants, operated a Haberdashery.
At about the time he was 10, Copperfield who had been described as being shy and a loner, began performing magic tricks to his friends and in the neighbourhoods around his house in order to fit in. Under the pseudonym “Davino the Boy Magician”, the young magician gained some sort of local fame which got the attention of the Society of American Magicians. By the time he was 12, the society admitted him into their organization, making him the youngest person ever to join the fraternity.
Copperfield attended Metuchen High School where he graduated from in 1974. During that time, he notably taught a magic course at New York University before going on to enroll at Fordham University, although he only spent about three weeks there before packing up and moving to Chicago to take up the lead role in the musical The Magic Man. It was during this time that Copperfield took his current stage name as he started headlining magic shows across the country while also performing in the musical which went on to become the longest-running musical in the history of Chicago.
In 1977, David Copperfield was able to land his first television show called The Magic of ABC which exposed him to a wider audience. The following year, he appeared in a CBS Special titled The Magic of David Copperfield after which he appeared in the movie Terror Train (1980). Between 1978 and 2001, Copperfield did a total of 19 television specials and documentaries, some of which included his most famous illusions such as the disappearance of an aeroplane, the disappearance and reappearance of the Statue of Liberty, him floating over the Grand Canyon, walking through the Great Wall of China, and then escaping from Alcatraz prison.
By the early 2000s, David Copperfield was performing over 500 shows per year in different countries around the world. According to Forbes, the magician was at this time, raking in millions of dollars estimated to be around $55 million, putting him amongst the top ten highest celebrity earners. As of 2018, all those earnings have put his net worth at $1 billion, making him the most commercially successful magician in history.

David Copperfield is not married but engaged to French model and designer, Chloe Gosselin. The pair reportedly began dating as far back as 2006 but chose to keep it under wraps. By February 2010, they somewhat certified their relationship by welcoming a daughter named Sky before going ahead to get engaged a few years later. It is not clear if and when the two are going to get married since Copperfield has in the past, spoken about his fear of tying the knot. His soon to be wife does not seem to mind as she said in an interview that she and the magician share a deep friendship as well as a child, which is the biggest commitment they could have with each other aside from getting married.
Gosselin who was born on the 22nd of August 1984 in Dreux, France now lives with her partner and daughter in the United States. She splits her time between their homes in Las Vegas, New York and Copperfield’s Caribbean islands known as Copperfield Bay. She is very active on social media through which she promotes the shoes she designs.
