Lena Waithe is an award-winning black American screenwriter, actress, and producer, best known for her outstanding performance in the comedy-drama series Master of None. Born on the 17th of May 1984 in Chicago, Illinois, United States, Lena Waithe developed a keen interest in becoming a writer when she was seven years old. She didn’t see much of her father who he passed away when she was fourteen. Along with her older sister, Waithe was raised by a single mother, Ethel Laverne.

Regarding her education, Lena Waithe attended Turner-Drew, an African-American Elementary school, after which she proceeded to Evanston and later completed her middle school at Chute Middle School. Afterward, she enrolled at Evanston Township High School and also later acquired a degree in Cinema and Television Arts from the Columbia College Chicago in 2006. While in college, Lena combined her studies with a job at a movie theatre; she also worked at Blockbuster in the media department.

Career

After graduation, Lena Waithe relocated to Los Angeles where she eventually kicked off her career. At the initial stages of her career, she worked as an assistant executive producer of the long-running UPN sitcom, Girlfriends. Later on, she landed her first acting gig in ’s The Comeback. She was later employed as a writer for the Fox television series, Bones. In 2012, she joined the Nickelodeon sitcom How to Rock as a writer and two years later, she produced her first comedy film, Dear White People.

She went on to write and also star in some other sitcoms such as the Twenties, Shit Black Girls Say (2011), and Hello Cupid (2013), among others. Waithe earned a spot on Variety’s 10 Comedians to Watch in 2014 and the following year, Showtime network commissioned her forthcoming series, The Chi. The story is based on the experiences of a young African-American in Southern Chicago. The series premiered on 7th January 2017 has been airing on Showtime network to date.

Lena Waithe got her breakthrough in 2015 after she co-wrote and starred in the Netflix show Master of None. In the series, the actress portrayed the character of a black gay woman, Denise, alongside Aziz Ansari and Alan Yang from 2015 to 2017. Her outstanding performance fetched her an Emmy Award, an MTV Trailblazer award, and a Gold Derby Award. She also made history as the first African American to win an Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series. Later in 2017, the actress was equally honored with the Out Magazine’s ‘Out 100: Artist of the Year Award’.
