Her father, who is regarded across the world as a powerful leader, is squeaky private about his personal life which explains why Mariya Putina is hardly a public figure to grace Russian and international newspaper front pages.

As closely guarded as information about her and that of her family is, the media doesn’t give up on digging to satiate curiosity about Mariya Putina. Here, you have just struck gold on a detailed account of who the eldest daughter of one of the most powerful men in the world is.

Who is Mariya Putina, Vladimir Putin’s Daughter?

Mariya Putina, Maria Putin or Maria Vladimirovna Faassen as she is referred to by different media is the daughter of Vladimir Putin and a member of Russia’s first family.

Mariya Vladimirovna Putina, nicknamed Masha Putin was born on April 28, 1985, in Leningrad, the Soviet Union, as the oldest daughter of her parents, Lyudmila Shkrebneva an Aeroflot flight attendant and Vladimir Putin. She was raised along with her sister, Katerina by her mother and father who were married for 31 years before getting divorced in 2014.

She attended Moscow State University of Fundamental Medicine from 2006 to 2011 under the pseudonym ‘Vorontsov.’ Before that, she finished her early education in Troparyovo-Nikulino, Moscow and then went to St. Petersburg State University to acquire a degree in International Economics as well as graduate from Moscow State Linguistic University.

Also, Putina joined a medical Ph.D. program at a Health Ministry research center headed by academic Ivan Dedov where she conducts her research. It was implied that Dedov got favors for overseeing her studies. Besides extra development funds being channeled by the Health Ministry to the institute, Dedov became the president of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences.

Although there are no details of her work, Putina is reported to hold a Ph.D. in medicine. Her father who is very tight-lipped about his family affairs in a rare comment about his daughters in 2015 said he’s proud of them. He pointed out that Putina and her sister live permanently only in Russia; studied only in the country’s universities; continues to study and work i; speak three European languages fluently, and are successful.

As for which one of the siblings can speak one or two Oriental languages fluently, we’re not sure whether it is Mariya Putina or her sister Katerina Tikhonova (referred by the matronymic name of her maternal grandmother).

Siblings: Katerina Tikhonova

Mariya Putina’s younger sister Katerina (born August 31, 1986) is her only known sibling. As the president’s daughters, the girls attended college in Russia under assumed names, with most of their classmates unaware of their high profiles.

Katerina is an acrobatic dancer and director of two initiatives at Moscow State University: the National Intellectual Development Foundation and the National Intellectual Reserve Centre.

She got married to Kirill Shamalov, the son of a wealthy Banker in 2013. Her husband is also the vice-president of Sibur Holding, a Russian gas processing and petrochemicals company in Moscow. The couple were estimated to be worth $2 billion. However, in January 2018, some sources reported they have separated.

Mariya Putina’s Spouse

The first daughter of Putin is married to Dutch businessman Jorrit Faassen and carries his last name, hence she’s also addressed as Maria Vladimirovna Faassen. It was reported that she has given birth to a daughter.

Jorrit Faassen is to have held high-level positions at subsidiaries of the Russian state gas company, Gazprom from 2007. According to a source, he left the company and went into consulting and later became the vice chairman for the board of directors at the consulting firm MEF Audit.

As the entire family and Putin’s associates are shrouded in mystery, local newspapers only have vague information about Mariya Putina and her partner. The country’s journalists say it is easier to give reports on national security issues than try to sniff into the Putin family.

However, it was revealed Faassen and Putina live in the penthouse of a building in Voorschoten, an upscale village in the wealthy province of South Holland near The Hague. Of course, that still leaves Dutch reporters in the cloud as all names of residences of the building were listed except the top plate, which was left blank.

Other bits of information about Faassen has also revealed that he studied architecture at The Hague University.

Controversy

On July 23, 2013, the mayor of the Dutch city of Hilversum, Pieter Broertjes, suggested in a radio interview that Mariya Putina could be deported from the Netherlands due to the tragic bombing that ended the lives of 298 passengers and crew aboard Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17, flying over the battlefields of eastern Ukraine.

Some citizens of the country even gathered outside her apartment building to protest. Later on, Broertjes apologized, tweeting that the comment “was not wise” and “stemmed from a sense of powerlessness that many people will recognize.”
