Mark Warner spent his early years growing up in Illinois, Chicago and later in Vernon, Connecticut where he attended a public secondary school, Rockville High School.

Warner developed a flair for politics while at Rockville High thanks to his eighth-grade social studies teacher, Jim Tyler who had inspired him to work for social and political change during the tumultuous year of 1968.

Warner was highly active in high school serving for three years as his class president. After graduating from high school, he proceeded to George Washington University from where he earned a BA in 1977 with a minor in political science. He scored an impressive 4.0 GPA and was the class valedictorian which is a big feat seeing as he is the first person from his family to earn a college degree.

While in school, Mark Warner had to take a job at Capitol Hill working in the office of U.S. Senator Abraham Ribicoff so he could pay for his tuition. His efforts paid off when he obtained his J.D from Harvard Law School in 1980. He kept up the thread of political activities until it was time to campaign for himself rather than others.

Mark Warner lost his first race to an electoral seat when Republican incumbent Senator John Warner defeated him in 1996. In 2002, he won the gubernatorial elections in Virginia, becoming the state’s 69th governor. He served for a single term, during which he was the Chair of the National Governors Association for a year from 2004 to 2005.

In 2008, Mark Warner prepared to enter the race to the White House but didn’t get to announce his candidacy, changing his mind due to family reasons. However, he vied for the Senate seat and defeated Republican, Jim Gilmore to be elected to the US Senate. He was re-elected in 2014.
