Her mother was an instructor while her father was a journalist who wrote for The Canadian Jewish News. Her birthplace is Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Amazingly, her parents were survivors of the terrible Holocaust purge who escaped to Israel from Germany and later settled in Canada.

She attended both the Forest Hill Collegiate Institute and Jarvis Collegiate Institute for her high school education before proceeding to the prestigious McGill University where she studied Russian Literature and 20th-century movie industry.
