Richard Burr is an American businessman and politician. He currently serves the people of North Carolina as a senior United States Senator and has been doing so since 2005. He is a Republican.

Richard Mauze Burr is the son of Rev. David Horace White Burr and Martha Burr. He was born on November 30, 1955, in Charlottesville, Virginia. His father was a pastor of First Presbyterian Church for 23 years until his retirement in 1986. He was also in the U.S. Navy where he served as a member of the Navy underwater demolition during the Second World War. He was also a politician and served his country as a minister but he died at the age of 91 in 2011.

Richard Burr attended Richard J. Reynolds High School in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. During his time in high school, Burr was a member of his high school football team. He graduated from Richard J. Reynolds High in 1974 and furthered his education at Wake Forest University. While studying, Richard joined the college football team, Wake Forest Demon Deacons. In 1978, he graduated from the university, obtaining a bachelor’s degree of Art in Communications.

Following Richard’s graduation from college, he worked as a sales manager at Carswell Distributing Company, and he worked there for 17 years before he set his political career rolling when he ran for Congress in 1992. He lost to the incumbent Democratic representative, Stephen L. Neal. Two years on, Burr contested again to represent the Tar Heel State’s Fifth Congressional District and this time the results of the polls went in his favor.

In 2004, Richard Burr chose to run for United States Senate in North Carolina. In the Republican primary election, he had an easy victory over his fellow Republicans John Ross Hendrix and Albert Wiley, winning with a landslide 87.92%, making him Republican representative for the 2004 North Carolina United States Senate polls. His Democratic opposition Erskine Bowled ran unopposed in his party’s primary.

On November 2, 2004, Republican candidate Richard Burr edged out his Democratic opponent in a close ballot by 51.6% to 47.0%, thereby making him the winner of the North Carolina U.S. Senate election.

In 2010, Burr chose to re-run as senator of North Carolina. His re-run was a success, he defeated his Democratic opposition Elaine Marshall by 54.8% to 43.1%, becoming the first Republican since Jesse Helms to be re-elected into the United States Senate from North Carolina.

In 2016, Burr ran for the third term and was 3-time lucky as he edged out Democratic representative Deborah K. Ross, 51.1% to 45.4%.

Richard Burr has been married to real estate agent Brooke F. Burr since 1984. His wife Brooke has over two decades of experience as a realtor. She obtained a bachelor of Arts degree in Economic Management from Salem college in 1979.

Her dad, Gerald Fauth Jr. was a war veteran. He served in the U.S. Navy. He died in November 2010 at 82. Brooke’s parents were married for 40 years. Her mother’s name is Carole Barber.

Richard and Brooke’s three decades of marriage have produced two kids and both are boys – Tyler Burr and William Burr.

Tyler Burr is the Vice president of Brand Intelligence group. The couple’s other son William Burr has a bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from the University of North Carolina. William Burr works for the Department of Defense in Quantico, Virginia, United States.
