One would never argue that the Constantine TV series has been one of the best that the world has ever seen. It is an American series developed by David Cerone and David S Goyer for NBC. The storyline is what one could call breathtaking with thrill, suspense, horror, not forgetting the adventure that makes the viewers glued to the screen and never wanting to attend to anything else.

The led TV series graced the screen on the 24th day of October 2014 until it’s 13th and final episode which aired on the 13th of February 2015. Following its first run, Constantine TV series was cancelled by the network on May 8, 2015, despite great reviews, although it attracted poor ratings.

Background Of The Show

The titular character John Constantine, played by Matt Ryan, tries his possible best to atone for his past sins after being a trickster, and redeem his soul from eternal torment. Now a demon hunter and dabbling master of the occult, he strives to protect the innocent from the oncoming supernatural threats that constantly force their way into our world as a result of the “Rising Darkness.”

To accomplish his mission, John must reach into his skills and a supernatural scry map to go round the world in order to send the terrors which destruct it back to where they belong. While on the mission, Constantine keeps his hopes high that his soul would be redeemed in the process.

He also forms a powerful team with Liv Aberdine (Lucy Griffiths), a daughter to a late close friend of his named Jasper Winters, to fight demons who have targeted her as well as learn more about her father. Liv has the ability to see the other world and predict supernatural occurrences. This makes her a threat to the new evil rising from the shadows. Unfortunately, Liv was dropped after the pilot and replaced with Zed.

Besides Constantine and Liv, other characters that made up the show’s cast include Zed Martin (Angélica Celaya) a psychic artist who was so captivated by John that he follows him on his exorcisms. Others are Francis “Chas” Chandler (Charles Halford), John Constantine’s oldest friend and staunch companion who also possesses powerful survival skills, as Manny, an authoritative angel assigned to watch over Constantine.

Why Was Constantine TV Series Cancelled?

Constantine TV series was released to rave critical reviews in October 2014, with praises for Ryan’s performance. It scored 72% on the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes and has an average rating of 6.2/10 based on 46 reviews. Metacritic, on the other hand, gave it a fair score of 53 out of 100 based on 25 reviews, indicating “mixed or average reviews.”

Even with the healthy reviews, the show failed to meet up with ratings, thus, leading to its cancellation. Even though the network would have loved for it to continue, we would have loved it even more but it’s poor ratings led to the demise.

Will There Be a New Constantine TV Series? Here’s What We Know

Considering the fact that this series is a great turn on, rumors made the rounds about several meetings between NBC and the show creator, all in a bid to give Constantine TV series another chance on network TV. Since NBC announced the cancellation of the show, we have hoped that the outcome of the supposed meetings was positive.

One fact that got our expectations higher was that the network did not rule out a possible renewal of a second season even with the cancellation. We just couldn’t wait to see the continuation in episode 14, Final Girl, which showrunner Daniel Cerone released on October 30, 2015.

However, our hearts were broken when he officially announced that the show was over. Ryan, just like Cerone, also disclosed his disappointment, stating that he can no longer pursue the journey of John Constantine. He further expressed his sadness at leaving behind a significant, dedicated and active fandom who deserves more years on the series both the cast and crew set out to make. He also added he will surely miss playing the role and we would definitely miss him too. Constantine TV series may have been cancelled but its legacy lives on.

This is shown by fan-favourite, Mark Ryan, who, for his love for Constantine, returned in spin-offs and related shows, where he reprises his role. He guest appeared in John Con Noir, CW’s and was a regular in Legends of Tomorrow, marking his entry into the CW’s Arrowverse. He also voices the character in the CW Seed animated web series, Constantine: City of Demons, a spin-off of the Justice League Dark film.
