What are the coolest Star Wars names and characters in the history of the franchise? The answer to that question would likely differ from person to person. And that’s good. There is something that movie franchises do for movie lovers all over the world—they create a mini-universe that brings all its fans together. Like many other franchises, Star Wars has spun its own fan websites, social media groups, spin-offs, toys, and merchandise sales to name a few. But very few have been able to match the impact or staying power of this intergalactic series since it made its debut in 1977.

And to think that the opening weekend of the original movie was laughable, to say the least. That dip did not last long, however, as the movie quickly gained a feverish following and set the backdrop for all the prequels, sequels, spin-offs, and characters we’ve come to know and love.

The characters especially have made the most impact with many adopting their names and characterization for a myriad of reasons. Everyone who is a Star Wars lover has a favorite character and there are definitely plenty to choose from. Here we’ve created in no particular order a round-up of 15 of the coolest Star Wars names and characters that we think anyone would love to adopt, regardless of their reason.

Star Wars Names And Characters You Would Love

1. Hans Solo

Okay, so maybe there’s a little order in the list. Regardless, it hardly makes any sense to start any list of the characters in Star Wars with any name that isn’t Hans. Plus, his cool factor is through the roof so there’s that.

Hans Solo, played by , is an integral part of the original trilogy and the Star Wars expanded universe. Many would argue that he is the most developed character of the franchise and you will find very few that will argue with that assertion.

Solo’s cool factor comes mostly from his transformation in the original trilogy. Fans held their breath as they watched him transform himself and his circumstances from an orphan and street rat to a soldier, smuggler, and eventual hero of the galaxy. A truly eventful journey from a single character. If that isn’t cool, nothing else is.

2. Princess Leia

Picture this: Leia Organa with her mean face on, wielding a blaster, and clad in her legendary gold bikini with the drapes. That’s an image that has kept many fans of the franchise and of Leia in particular glued to all things Star Wars.

It is really fortunate that Leia’s damsel-in-distress component was balanced out beautifully by the fact that she is also a warrior with surprising strength, and independent spirit and a front runner in the Rebellion and subsequently, the Resistance.

Being the only female character if indispensable significance in the Star Wars universe, she has definitely earned all the cool factors needed to be on this list. Wherever she is, will surely be proud to have been the one that brought us one of the earliest models of badass female warriors that the world of sci-fi has ever seen.

3. Obi-Wan Kenobi

A character has to be really cool to be written back into the script more than 40 years after he was killed off. Granted, the write-back was a prequel in the expanded universe, but it is almost impossible to find a character as influential as the wise and gifted Jedi master.

Obi Wan’s influence is reflected in so many ways throughout the Star Wars series. For one, he was friend and master to Luke Skywalker’s father, Anakin, who later succumbed to the Dark Side and transformed into the lethal Darth Vader. Like Anakin, Obi-Wan also took Luke under his wings before he was eventually killed by Vader.

Played by in the original trilogy and by Ewan McGregor in the prequel trilogy, Kenobi is an influential leader and hero to many within an outside the franchise, and that makes him one of the coolest of the Star Wars names and characters, however, you look at it.

4. Luke Skywalker

Before his life became complicated, Luke Skywalker’s life growing up in Tatooine was nothing spectacular. And then just happens and the Star Wars audience is enraptured as they watch Luke transform from simple farmhand to pilot, and then to Yoda’s last apprentice and finally to the hero who goes up against the Emperor and his father Darth Vader.

Luke is probably one of the most persuasive characters in the series that make Star Wars fans want to become Jedis. He exuded unwavering confidence in his abilities and knew how to use them to catastrophic effect. Arguably the coolest Jedi of all.

5. Yoda

Luke owes everything he became as a Jedi to Yoda. Being the Grandmaster of the Jedi Order, Yoda is predictably the wisest and most powerful Jedi, which is a little weird at first glance given that he is characterized as a two-foot-tall, species-indeterminate creature with a walking stick.

But then you consider that he has lived 900 years and taught Luke everything he knows about being a Jedi, and this becomes clearer. Plus, it helps his cool factor that his tiny Shrek size is truly forgotten when you put a lightsaber in his hands.

6. Darth Maul

Maul can’t be considered one of the major characters in the Star Wars universe, but he is definitely one of the coolest Star Wars names and characters. A true villain inside and out, the reptilian colored character is an apprentice to Darth Sidious. That says a lot about him given that Sidious is extremely selective with the people he picks to stand with him.

Perhaps Maul’s most endearing qualities is his singleness of mind and seething hatred for the Jedi Order. His hatred is so extreme that it’s beautiful. It’s so believable that fans of the franchise forget to ask why he hates them so much.

7. Darth Vader

Vader is more than just another bad guy, and that is because he has more depth to his character than any other on the Dark Side. Formerly Anakin Skywalker, underneath all that evil — amplified by his intimidating all-black regalia — he is just a tortured soul.

He is a true villain who we’ve come to hate and love in equal measure. This is because he has done a lot of good right alongside his myriad of bad deeds. For one, he crowned Darth Sidious as Emperor and all but wiped out the Jedi Order. However, he made an attempt to redeem himself by essentially bringing balance back to the Force when he ended the Emperor — a deed we can’t even attribute to the all-knowing Yoda or the influential Obi-Wan Kenobi.

8. Mace Windu

A definite inclusion among the coolest Star Wars names and characters. Mace Windu is a refreshing step away from the grumpy, mightier-than-thou grandpa’s in the Jedi Council that was hugely responsible for turning Anakin into Vader.

Windu cool factor is greatly helped that he has a lightsaber fighting style all of his own, and is even better than Yoda in lightsaber combat. Also, he is the only Jedi with an unconventional lightsaber color — purple. And he knows how to use it too.

Even when he isn’t fighting, there is a quiet confidence and fury in his eyes that make Windu one of the most terrifying and loved Jedis in the universe. Of course, it helps that Windu is played by Samuel L. Jackson, and when has he ever not looked cool?

9. Qui-Gon Jinn

Every master was trained by someone, and for Obi-Wan, it was Qui-Gon Jinn. Portrayed as the stubborn knight who did not have any problem defying anyone, including the Jedi Council. Jinn was the one who identified Anakin’s Force-sensitive potential. Qui-Gon may have only appeared in The Phantom Menace, but the part he directly — such as when he took Anakin in — can be said to have contributed directly to how the rest of the story played out.

Besides this, the Jedi Master character probably helped to give the kickass personality in the roles that he has reveled in since then. Also, Qui-Gon Jinn had the coolest hair of any Jedi.

10. Stormtroopers

Stormtroopers make the cut as one of the coolest Star Wars names and characters for one reason only — their looks. Seriously, that’s all they get. Boasting a feverish loyalty to the Empire, they march to carry out their orders, clad in a resplendent, futuristic, state-of-the-art white ensemble. We can’t really tell if the bad guys wearing white was intentional but it worked.

The scout troopers are perhaps the only element of the original trilogy that still look futuristic decades after in the prequel trilogy. But then they look terrible in combat and even made the audience laugh with their sometimes comical and unreasonable deaths.

11. Chewbacca

There is no better sidekick for Hans Solo than the lovely Chewie. Almost as multi-faceted as Solo, Chewie fits right in alongside him: warrior, mechanic, co-pilot, smuggler and a lot more.

Like a few other characters, Chewbacca does not have the gift of language, however, it has stymied his communication one bit. Since debuting in The Revenge of the Sith, the fuzzball has represented the franchise in the culture, perhaps just as much as Vader or Yoda.

12. Padmé Amidala

If you think Princess Leia is one of the coolest Star Wars names and characters, you don’t need to look far to see where she gets it from — her mother, Padmé. Appearing mostly in the prequels, Anakin’s wife, and mother to Leia and Luke shows her skills with a blaster, something her daughter excels in too.

Her cool factor is amplified by the fact that she is not just another mother sitting at home and worrying about her kids. She is instead in the thick of the action with them, even going undercover one time as her handmaiden.

13. Jango Fett

Although his son, Bob Fett, is better known than he is, Jango is much more than just a passing character. Clad in his signature blue Mandalorian, the bounty hunter is exceptional at what he does, thanks in no small part to his closing abilities, which is kind of the major inspiration for the Attack of the Clones inspiration.

It feels like any quick list of some of the best action sequences in the series have Fett in the thick of things. From his brawl and a high-speed chase with Obi-Wan to his dismemberment by the purple first of Mace Windu, wherever Jango is, there’s sure to be lots of action.

14. Q’ira

Q’ira could not escape the hell of the underworld, so she let it train her, teach her, and transform her into one of the most lethal fighters and negotiators. She shows her gravitas in the way she saves the lives of Lando and his buddy Hans Solo and stealth her way to becoming boss over the likes of Darth Maul.

She stands right beside Amidala and Leia as an inspirational female character. And yes, a cool one too. Of course, it helps that Q’ira is , or as most people know her, Khaleesi, the Mother of Dragons from .

15. Finn

Shock addition to the list? There’s a reason why a stormtrooper rounds up our list of the coolest Star Wars names and characters. Simply put, we may never again see another stormtrooper give the First Order the middle finger the way Finn did. In fact, we didn’t know these herd soldiers even had the ability to think individually.

And then there’s his bromance with the beloved pilot of the resistance Poe Dameron. Played by , Finn is a refreshing move away from the well established Star Wars archetypes and uses every second of screen time he is given to its fullest.
