A celebrated criminal appellate lawyer, Alan has an impressive record of winning 13 of the 15 murder and attempted murder cases he has handled. At a time, Alan joined the faculty of Harvard Law School as an assistant professor. This was in 1964 and he was the youngest full professor of law in the school’s history at the age of 28.

Who Is Alan Dershowitz?

Alan Morton Dershowitz is a scholar of the United States Constitution and criminal law. Records say he was born on the 1st of September 1938 in Williamsburg, Brooklyn to his parents Claire Dershowitz and Harry Dershowitz who are traditional Jews. As such, Alan was brought up with strong Jewish principles; this was expected as his father was the president of the Young Israel Synagogue in the 1960s’.

According to Alan, his father had high morals and a strong sense of justice as it was Harry’s belief that it was the Jew’s job to defend the underdogs. The scholar attended the Yeshiva University High School which was an independent prep school for only boys located in upper state Manhattan, New York City. In school, Alan had a reputation as a troublemaker and a rebellious student who was often critical of his teachers and the general running of the school.

After Alan finished high school, he moved to Brooklyn College in New York for a degree in Political Science which he received in 1959. From his high school days, Alan was challenged and criticized by his teachers “to do something that requires no brain”. Because of this, he decided to become a Lawyer and after college, went off to Yale Law School where he graduated top of his class with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) in 1962.

After his admission into the bar, Alan served as a clerk for David L. Bazelon who was the then Chief Judge of the Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia. Focusing on criminal law, Alan Dershowitz has had some really high profile clients over the years such as , O.J Simpson, Harry Reems, and Jim Baker just to name a few.

He is currently advising Julian Assange’s legal team. Away from his career, Alan is married to Carolyn Cohen and the couple has three kids. When his son Jamin Dershowitz converted to a Roman Catholic, it prompted Alan’s book “The Vanishing Jew”

Alan Dershowitz has also authored other books on Law and politics including Reasonable Doubts: The Criminal Justice System and the O.J. Simpson Case (1996);  Reversal of Fortune: Inside the von Bülow Case (1985), The Case for Israel (2003); Rights From Wrongs: A Secular Theory of the Origins of Rights (2004), and The Case for Peace (2005).

In 1995, Alan Dershowitz acted as an appellate adviser to the defense team of O.J Simpson during the trial in the much-publicized murder case. The legal team assembled in defense of O.J Simpson has been historically dubbed The Dream Team because of their expertise.

By virtue of his political beliefs and inclinations, Alan Dershowitz is a Democrat. He has a massive influence within the political party which was only emphasized when he threatened to revoke his party membership in 2016 if Keith Ellison was appointed Chair of the party. The party later settled for Tom Perez.

Alan has thrown his weight behind candidates of the Democratic Party in the last election cycles, supporting Barrack Obama and Hillary Clinton. Interestingly, he has taken a tough stand on the way Democrats have gone about criminalizing their political differences with .

His refusal to support the methods employed by the Robert Muller investigation has surprised Liberals who seem to find it tough to support any move made by the President. Alan Dershowitz initially blasted fellow Democrats for attacking the mental fitness of the president calling it a dangerous game. He also has reiterated that there was no case of obstruction of justice in the case of President Trump firing Former FBI director .

On his recent appearances on Fox News and CNN, Alan has insisted that nothing has changed about his political convictions, saying he remains an advocate of civil liberties irrespective of who is affected. He is of the opinion that the FBI’s raid on Donald Trump’s attorney Michael Cohen may have violated the lawyer-client privilege. Alan feels these violations establish precedents that may have negative repercussions in future.
