Bill was born William Maher on January 20, 1956, in New York City to William Aloysius Maher Jr. who was a news editor/radio announcer and Julie Maher who was a nurse. He was raised alongside his sister, Kathy Maher.
While his mother was Jewish, his father was Irish-American who brought up his children as Roman Catholics. However, because of his views that differ from that of the church on birth control, the elder Maher stopped taking his kids to church when Bill was 13.
Raised in New Jersey, Maher attended Pascack Hills High School from where he graduated in 1974. From there, he moved to Cornell University where according to him, he sold pot to make it through college and earned the money he needed to launch his comedy career. The comedian majored in English and history and graduated in 1978.
When he began as a comedian, Bill Maher found his way around thanks to his harsh language and sarcasm. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, he combined comedy and acting. Some of the films he appeared in at the time include D.C. Cab (1983), Club Med and Ratboy (1986), and House II: The Second Story (1987).
It was until 1993 that he got his real break when he got his own show, Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher. The late-night political talk show ran from 1993 to 1997 on Comedy Central and then from 1997 to 2002 on ABC. Although it was successful and won many awards including an Emmy Award, it ended in 2002 after ABC refused to resign a deal with him.
After his first show ended, Bill later began the Real Time with Bill Maher on cable television network HBO in 2003.
Real Time has not only come to enjoy great followership, but it has also got various recognition. From 2005 through 2014, the show was nominated for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Variety Series each year.
