The names of his father and mother are not known. In 1977, they divorced, and Robert’s mother got married a second time after a few years. Robert’s ancestry is Caucasian. He has two brothers and one half-sister. As per his academics, he passed out from Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School. Then he went to Robinson College. In 2001, the pair aired an episode of their own sketch show on the now-defunct Play UK channel. Mitchell and Webb’s next effort was leading parts in the Channel 4 sitcom Peep Show, which aired in 2003. The pair shared the 2007 Royal Television Society Award for “Comedy Performance”. They were also, jointly nominated for Best Television Comedy Actor at the 2006 British Comedy Awards. The Peep Show is the longest-running sitcom in Channel 4 history, airing for nine series.

In 2006, Webb married fellow comedy performer Abigail Burdess after meeting her on the set of a radio sketch show. Mitchell was the best man at the wedding ceremony. They now live in Kilburn, London, and have two daughters.
